In early 20th century China, women were forced into marriage known as arranged marriages. In China, women are not equal to men due to their patriarchal society. Often arranged marriages in China had a negative effect on women. Amy Tan portrays how women were mistreated in marriages in her book, The Joy Luck Club. In the chapter, “ The Red Candle” Lindo Jong was forced into an arranged marriage at a very young age and was treated horribly. Arranged marriages portrayed in Amy Tan’s “The Red Candle” clearly exemplifies the culture of early 20th century China and its negative impacts on the lives of women.

During the Renaissance period, arranged marriage was very common due to the fact that money, political power, and land would result from the marriage. Even though arranged marriages are depicted as an incompetent commodity there are benefits of the marriage for both the husband as well as the wife and that is why there are still arranged marriages today.

In Justice, Gender, and the Family, Susan Moller Okin presents a critique of modern theories of justice. She claims that these theorists make fatal assumptions regarding justice in the family. For example, she claims that John Rawls assumes that a family is inherently just and fails to consider how gender fits into the original position and veil of ignorance. He neglects the difference of opportunity in the family and the way that gender has a role as the primary school for justice. Okin believes that women must be included to create a satisfactory theory of justice that remedies the modern inequalities that we still see in families today. I am going to extend Okin’s claims to the institution of arranged marriages, specifically in the Indian culture.
