Asphalt Concrete Composite Material Report – A Case Study In The Application Of Composite Technology
Introduction
1. This report aims to outline the application of a composite material in the field of engineering. I have chosen to do my report on Asphalt Concrete used for Roads and Parkways.
2. Asphalt concrete (Often referred to as asphalt, blacktop, or pavement in the USA, or tarmac in the UK) is a composite material commonly used to:
a. Surface roads
b. Surface parking lots
c. Surface airport runways
d. Core embankment dams
3. The process of production and application was refined and enhanced by Belgian inventor and U.S. immigrant Edward de Smedt in 1870.
Composition
4. It consists of mineral aggregate combined together with liquid asphalt (the oil-based …show more content…

The table below demonstrates the pros and cons of asphalt s compared to the previously and still often used concrete for driveways: Concrete Asphalt
Cost More expensive (average cost is $10 to $15 per square foot). Costs less (average cost is $3 to $5 per square foot).
Environment Almost 100% Recyclable Almost 100% Recyclable
Cracking Patching more obvious; may need expensive repairs. Easier to repair. Cracks and holes can be filled and sealed.
Upkeep Less maintenance, but repairs more difficult. More maintenance, but it's easier to do.
Longevity Up to 30 years Up to 20 years
Curing Wait seven days before driving on it. Can drive on asphalt almost immediately.
Oil & gas Gas and oil spills leave more obvious stains than on asphalt. Oil leaks not as noticable, but gasoline will cause damage.
Weather Cracks under extreme pressure or surface movement. Shrinks and expands with temperature changes.

Conclusion
18. I feel I have gained a solid understanding of the composite material Asphalt Concrete and its production, structure and engineering uses.
19. This report has summarized several key factors of Asphalt Concrete incuding:
a. Its Applications
b. Structure
c. Properties
d.
