Before I enrolled at any university, I had objectives and a career path that I hope to follow. I also know that my goals will be met if I read certain courses. In the university, there are some characteristics that a professor may have that may push me to want a course from that professor. I also understand that not all universities have programs that are accredited.
This week’s readings and discussions have added another impetus to my understanding of the syllabus. I am now aware that a syllabus is a communication tool, organizational tool, and an agreement between me the student and my professors (West, Bubenzer, Cox, & McGlothin, 2013). I have in my mind that if a school or a program in a particular school is accredited, therefore, all the courses will lead me to the right career path. I will choose and course in that university or that program over any other school or program. As a counseling student, accreditation is essential. The council for accreditation of counseling and related program (CACREP), a well-recognized organization. For any person aspiring to join the noble profession of counseling, he should attain a program that is CACREP accredited. Because such accreditation is both a process and a status and denotes a commitment to program excellence (CACREP, 2016). Textbooks are a highly portable form of information and can be accessed when, where, and at whatever rate and level of detail, the reader desires. When Gambescia, 2006 talks of shared governance this is the best way to do it because the student will on their own free time and best environment discuss, and interpret what was done in class. In this way, the students will develop a better understanding and if questions there are, will ask the teacher later.
In choosing a book, the teacher/administration is trying to answer the following questions; What is the effect of the resources, methodologies, and technologies on the student learning? How are the students using textbooks? What are the students learning from these manuals? Which of the students are using the books? How and to what extent are the students using free resources (The national academy of science, 2017)? In the 21st century with the students becoming more computer dependent, it useful choosing material that can be found in soft copies and is internet
