Reasons Why Hate Speech is an Issue Today Having such a diverse country is not as easy as it seems considering hate speech takes a big role in our society. Hate speech is a form of speech that intentionally offends an individual or group in our society based on what they believe in such as race, religion or other traits in a negative way. Some people confuse hate speech with free speech believing it is a way to express themselves but others do not see it that way. In essays “On Racist Speech” by Charles R. Lawrence, “Protecting Freedom of Expression on the Campus” by Derek Bok and “The Trouble at Yale” by David Cole, they explain their different views whether hate speech should be allowed or banned on campus. Even though some people value hate speech, in my eyes it should be censored on campus because hate speech is insensitive, can cause riots, and does not encourage equality.
Student Ethics Cause and Effect In colleges and universities, there remains the fact that plagiarism is rampant on college campuses in the United States. Much research has been done by university professors, in which they came up with options for the prevention of plagiarism in academia. Obviously, professors have numerous options available to them for the prevention of plagiarism in their classrooms and university campuses, yet students can go unnoticed in their cheating behavior. Students, especially college students, should know that cheating is not acceptable behavior. College and university students cheat for a wide variety of reasons; one reason why students cheat is because they think that it is an acceptable thing to do.

This is not just about cultures outside the United States but inside as well. We are a melting pot with a wide variety of races, religions, political and ethical views. These are all parts of cultural differences and living under a “Diversity Umbrella” (DuBrin 161).
Sana Zaidi MA English, Semester – III Censorship in Dystopian Novels According to Wikipedia “Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other such entities.” The very first line of the given definition contradicts the basic human right, The Right to Speech. However, it justifies the violation as it is read further. It is violated for the safety of the government and most probably for the protection of the citizens as well. Despite of the explanation for the existence of the censorship it is important for the citizens to have an idea of what is being censored. What is being censored?
looks at how it ultimately affects society and targeted groups. There are a myriad of arguments for and against the allowance of hate speech. Some citing Democracy and the first amendment others stem from the fear of eroded freedoms of expression and have valid points, but ultimately, it corrodes society’s human rights and freedoms. The two fold issue being intolerance of the freedom of self-determination and the fact that some are born a color or culture and have no choice. Therefore, hate speech is anti-social and damaging to society as a whole.
