ENG 112-805K: Writing Research in the Discipline has helped me gain more insight into writing.
Eng 112 has changed my perception and thinking about writing. Writing is a skill and writing in any discipline has its own rules and guidelines. The assignment on The Rhetorical Triangle is an eye opener. Researching on the Rhetorical triangle and its relevance in writing led me to discover the 3 important elements in writing, which is the Lagos (presentation of facts), Ethos (proving one’s credibility to their audience through information) and Patho (the importance of connecting with your audience emotionally). In my writing for the course I tried to incorporate these 3 factors into them.
Specific skills and knowledge gained in ENG 112.I have come to appreciate writing in APA and MLA format. I did have some basic knowledge in writing in both APA and MLA format, but ENG 112 has helped me gained more depth in these areas. The first assignment on MLA basic document setup was very helpful. Am now able to set my paper in the correct format. Also the assignment on writing in science vs business writing and writing in science vs humanities has enlightened me on the differences in writing and citing in MLA vs APA. For example, the source page for MLA is called work cited and APA references. For in-text citation MLA uses the last name of the author and the page

One of my goals during this course was to gain a better understanding in this subject and avoid plagiarism in every aspect of writing. The assignment on plagiarism taught me a lot. Before, I did not know paraphrasing was considered a form of plagiarism. Throughout this course I have worked hard to give credit to writers, authors and every source of my information in my writings. I believe I have improved in this area. I might not be 100% there but this course has helped me to achieve this
From the Genre Experiment 1 (blog post) assignment, I learned how to create a blog post. The Genre Experiment 1 also enabled me to obtain useful skills about conducting research. Through the Genre experiment 2 (movie review) assignment, I learned how to author a film review write-up. The knowledge I obtained through these writing exercises constitutes the information that I want to remember from the English 1010 course. In this essay, I will outline the specific knowledge that I obtained by tackling the five English 1010 assignments of Literacy Narrative, Rhetorical Analysis, Non-Academic Discourse, Genre Experiment 1 and Genre Experiment 2.
Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals.
To illustrate, the author repeats “you” to indicate that the boys are held responsible. Through this repetition, the author makes it clear that the “boys” are the only ones responsible for the sheep’s death. McCaig expresses his anger towards the criminals by blaming the criminals through the use of “you.” The phrase “hunters-men” is repeated to compare the felons to men. He degrades the “boys” by characterizing them as irresponsible when a man is responsible and follows the rules.
In the intercalary chapter number 25, Steinbeck shows the decay of morals and also physical decay in the chapter. He contrasts land that is used naturally for its nutrients, and land used, or in Steinbeck’s eyes, wasted for profits. The chapter has some apocalyptic overtones throughout. Steinbeck uses vivid imagery and harsh statements to convey his message. The chapter seems to show how there are consequences for interrupting the lands life force to line ones pockets.
Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help uses imagery to help the reader better comprehend the meaning of the passage. As the reader reads along in the passage reading about little Miss Skeeter, “Munching on peanuts, sorting through the pieces spread out on the table, a storm [raging] outside (Stockett 77). Through this imagery that the author provides the reader is instantly transformed into the world of little Miss Skeeter as she is sitting down by Constantine on a dark stormy night doing a puzzle. The reader can hear the crunch of the peanuts and smell the rain coming from outside as they read the passage. Stockett also uses diction to contribute to the imagery of the passage.
The rest of chapter 6 continues with the themes of fear and loss of youth and hope. The soldiers experiences a loss of innocence more extreme than anyone back at home. It was extreme, abrupt, and forever changed the lives of the men. They will never again be able to fit in back home because of the horrific events they went through. Paul believes that, “even if these scenes of our youth were given back to us we would hardly know what to do.”
Bryce‘s responses in the reading comprehension unit demonstrate his ability to read and understand both fiction and non-fiction material at grade level. He was able to use a variety of comprehension strategies to make sense of unfamiliar text. Bryce‘s narrative piece entitled Blackout, demonstrates his ability to write grade level text for a variety of purposes and audiences. He is able to organize his writing effectively by including details to support his main idea. Bryce used language intentionally and edited his work for spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The main point of this article, in my opinion, is summed up on page ninety four. “A foundation and critical challenge for the Emerging church will be teaching people that they are the church and that they do not simply attend or go to one.” When the focus is brought to the Church as a building there seems to be a bigger issue. WE become more worried about the structure of the church and the materialistic things that come with the make-up of a church instead of what is truly important. To help further understand this Kimball provides the reader with valuable information, “However, the word Church was used (in scriptures) primarily to describe the followers of Jesus.”
Effective writing is done in several different ways, one of which is through the rhetorical triangle. The rhetorical triangle comprises of ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos appeals to moral character, credibility, and tone. Logos is facts, statistics, and reason. While pathos is about emotion, impact, and personal connection.
I also learned about the end punctuation, the comma, parentheses and quotation marks. I am able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of plagiarism by correctly summarizing, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and acknowledging the sources through MLA/APA documentation. I was able to organize my thoughts effectively, and pose thoughtful arguments and effectively support my argument with a strong introduction and well-rounded
Middle School Get Me Out Of Here James Patterson Rafe adjusts to his new school by acknowledging the school’s art programs and classes and by causing a little trouble with Zeke and Kenny. For instance, after Mrs. Ling gave Rafe and the other students a tour around the art section of the school, Rafe thought that the new school was extraordinary and that “seventh grade was looking up, up, UP!” (Page 57, Patterson). In addition, after Zeke and Kenny made Rafe look like a total fool during the critique, Rafe and his new friend Matty threw rubber glove balloons filled with water at Zeke and Kenny as their revenge.
I believe that both triangles, but more specifically the rhetorical triangle, effectively illustrate “the balance of all three appeals that a writer should use for an effective argument” (“Reading: Rhetorical Triangle). From the diagrams, it seems that each individual rhetoric and communication component remains “as important as the others and too much of one is likely to produce an argument that readers with either find unconvincing or that will cause them to stop reading” (“Reading: Rhetorical Triangle). With the purpose of technical communication centered upon simplifying complex information, the use of both triangles in this form of communication seems more than necessary. For example, when creating any form of technical writing having an awareness of your “reason for the communication” and your identity as a “the creator of the communication” as well as to whom your writing is directed towards aids in communicating information in a more understandable manner for audience (“Reading: Communication Triangle). In addition, carefully finding a balance between all three
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
