Nada Awar Assignment : Short Story A young man walked into the hospital with a fearless flame in his eyes as if he had nothing to lose. Gazed around the room and came up to a group of nurses chatting and giggling on their lunch break. The man stood in the circle of nurses not saying a word until they stopped talking and stared at the man. “I need a check up” he said bluntly, “is nurse Hmadeh here?” The nurse that had been talking and making jokes was surprised he knew her family name at first, but she quickly got over it and told him to wait for her in the room. She remembered the problems she faced as a college student “Maybe your lacking motivation”. “No motivation you got that right,” he said as he stormed out of the room. The nurse seemed shocked by his strange behavior but did not seem to think much of it as she rejoined her coworkers. The next day the man came in and asked for the same nurse. He asked her for painkillers, and then randomly started telling her stories of past experiences. As soon as he finished his story he left abruptly. This continued for a couple of weeks, he would arrive exactly at 3 O’clock and the nurse engaged in his conversations in sympathy at first. But as he told her about himself, she started to relate to his experiences. Moreover, she found that they had many common interests. They even turned out to be from the same village, but he had lived abroad. He reminded the nurse of her childhood abroad, she felt relieved when she was in his company. Every time he told a story she felt as if a portal opened in front of her that took her away from her routine lifestyle and everyday stress. Sherri had been struggling with morning sickness and thought that she should try taking medicine. She watched her husband that had just gotten back Europe place the medicine all the way on the top cubboard. Regardless of what drug was inside, if I saw someone put something out of reach I think I would be pretty hesitatent to just grab it right away when I did not feel well. Once she realized what she took, Sherri called her doctor and told him what happened. His solution was, “‘If you were my wife, I’d give you the same advice,” the doctor told her.

Before Mrs. A got onto the ward the orthopaedic team was called to tell them a patient was coming to the ward with a fractured neck of femur and would need a review.
The man woke calmly, just like any other ordinary morning, he got up out of his soft bed and looked at the other side. It was empty, it seemed his wife had gone shopping, the man turned and stumbled out of the room into the cozy living room. The fireplace was lit and kept the room bright and warm. The man continued walking through and into the kitchen, the benches were clean and ordered. He opened the freezer, got out two slices of bread and put them into the toaster.
The text recounts an event that took place at a train. It involves the main character which is the “you” in the passage, the tramp, and the old lady. It is told through the eyes and the point of view of the “you”. The text starts with the tramp approaching narrator and telling him about his birthday. Then he goes down the car and sits down on the lap of an old lady.

Waking up Amy felt the discomfort of pressure in her throat. Her groggy mind trying to remember what had happened, a flash of a memory -almost dreamlike- skated across her mind. Tires sliding across wet asphalt, the rush of the dense green forest racing by in a disorienting display, the ear piercing, stomach churning sound of metal on metal. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” demonstrates the personal growth of the dynamic protagonist Louise Mallard, after hearing news of her husband’s death. The third-person narrator telling the story uses deep insight into Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts and emotions as she sorts through her feelings after her sister informs her of her husband’s death. During a Character analysis of Louise Mallard, a reader will understand that the delicate Mrs. Mallard transforms her grief into excitement over her newly discovered freedom that leads to her death. As Mrs. Mallard sorts through her grief she realizes the importance of this freedom and the strength that she will be able to do it alone.
On page 114 a patient stated “sometimes when I am having a bad day, you know, why is this happening to me? I say to God”. As nurse, it is important to help a patient understand their struggles and offer to pray with them. This chapter emphasize on the power of praying with a patient when possible. A family member states on page 115 “I was particularly touched when she prayed for Jonathan in the Hospital”.
The Short Story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin explores the emotions of Louise Mallard a woman with a heart disease. In the hour that the story is told, it ranges from showing Mrs. Mallard different reactions to learning of her husbands death to him surprisingly showing up alive and eventually her untimely death from a heart disease. Although only a brief period of time is shown, many emotions are revealed through the third person omniscient point of view. This point of view shows more than just the protagonists thoughts and is not limited to one person. It allows the readers to know something about Mrs. Mallard that she does not as the story ends after Mrs. Mallard has already died.
