Acquisition: The earliest stage of learning, where the athlete learns the component of movements and performs them in the correct order. As this is the first skill, movements of players are often lack precision and rhythm.
Consolidation: Athlete can perform the movements and skills with correct form and a stable amount of precision and synchronization. At this stage, repetition of movements helps the athlete learn how to respond in atmospheres such as pressure, demands increase or conditions changing. After the consistent repetition, athletes begin to develop a personal style.

The focus is mainly on team possession and elimination skills. This would include 2 vs. 1 situation. The athlete should have a good understanding of when to pass to a certain player depending on where they stand on the field and the opposing team. This skill trains athletes to keep ball possession and not only for the sole purpose of attacking. The player needs to be trained in passing and receiving the ball in all directions, (North, South, East and West)
Ball Control: The focus of this skill is on individual possession and elimination. Ball possession is one of the key skills in the game of field hockey. Players must feel confident to hold the ball and keep possession when under pressure or in tight spaces. Athletes must be trained to eliminate a defended in a 1 vs. 1 situation, without losing control of the ball, while also creating scoring opportunities.
Off-Ball Movement: Athletes must learn to move into position to create support for the ball carrier. When players are not in control of the ball, they should be creating passing lanes, and providing width and depth to the field of play. Players should never crowd around the ball, and should remain in their part of the field while defending.
