Kenya’s Athletic Prowess Athletics is a sport which has been in existence for a long time since it dates back to 776BCE.It comprises a variety of competitions such as track and field, race walking and cross country running. All this are undertaken by both men and women. International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is the international body which governs athletics and it was formed in 1912. Kenya is an East African nation which is well known for her top athletics performance especially in middle and long distance running. Silken Laumann Olympian, Inspirational Speaker and Author Silken laumann is a champion Canadian rower. Laumann was born in Mississauga, Ontario in 1965. Starting in 1976, Laumann won a number of awards, including a gold medal in quadruple sculls at the U.S. Championships, two gold medals in single sculls at the Pan American Games, a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in the double sculls with her sister Daniele. Laumann rapidly emerged as the leader of a new and much improved Canadian women's rowing team. Percy Cerutty described Herb Elliot, the 1960 1500m Olympic Champion as a “Stotan”. The term “Stotan” refers to a cross between a “Stoic” and a “Spartan.” The Stotan code explains that an athlete must be able to withstand any physical hardship to accomplish feats of strength and endurance. A Stotan is tough, works hard, and never complains. It also goes on to state that the mind is what hold’s back an athlete in training and competition.

The events he won gold in are the 100-meter dash, long jump, 200-meter dash and 400-meter relay. My passion for track and field began with a Nike advertisement. At age ten, I opened the newspaper to a two-page spread of the hometown distance running legend Steve Prefontaine overlaid by a paragraph of inspirational copy. It concluded asking, “Where is the Next Pre?” The story of his small town Oregon roots, gutsy racing style, and ambition to be the best resonated with me like nothing ever had before. I told myself I was the next Pre, and then tore off for my first run through the streets of Eugene, Oregon – “Tracktown USA”.
