1. Introduction
Atrocities against women mean the cruel and wicked acts towards women. The aim of this project is to scrutinize and analyse the atrocities against women which specifically take place in India with the help of newspaper articles. The greatest social evils present in India would be the types of harassment which women face. India has always been a patriarchal society therefore most women have faced humiliation, torture, exploitation, or some sort of harassment. Atrocities cause mental as well as physical harm which can leave permanent damage or can majorly affect the health of the victim.

In most cases, the family members are the ones to kill the woman or the girl of their family. It is one of the most common crimes in India.
An 18-year-old girl was strangled by her 45-year-old father, an obvious case of honour killing. He was taken in custody only after the victim’s mother filed a complaint against him. Raju Botham, the culprit, was a labourer and confessed that he killed his own daughter because she was in love with a man who belonged to the same community and she was determined to marry him. The accused got sent to judicial custody after. Station House Officer of Gangaghat said that Shivani’s mother and her daughter-in-law witnessed Shivani’s murder. They both told the police how they saw him strangle her at night while she was asleep. They made an attempt to save her but failed to do so. The police retrieved the rope which was used to commit the murder. The victim, known as Shivani was a resident of Champapurwa locality and was a student of class 12th. Shivani’s brother stated that their father had warned her several times about her love affair and was keeping watch on activities for the last three months. On Tuesday night, the victim was caught speaking to her lover on the phone and was threatened by the accused. She refused to end the relationship and confessed that she will marry him. Media, sports culture and pornography all multi-billion dollar industries have the potential to lead individuals to commit violence acts towards women. The media with regards to advertisements and commercials, present women in an objectifying manner and sometimes contain words that may hint at sexual mindset. Athletes are taught to be tough, however that mindset does not always stay on the field. Some athletes that have the potential to continue professionally attract a lot of attention from fellow classmates and fans all around the country.

The brutality of slavery began to spread throughout these years and the escape of slaves from the south to the north that brought along their stories showcased the brutality of slavery. This made the northerners start to oppose slavery harder and abolitionists began to speak out. Women were another group affected by the oppression of the government and the system. Seen as lower than men, women had many restrictions on what they could do in life.

One important discrimination that people face everyday, is in the workplace. Women earn 79- cents for every dollar a man earns. “An awful lot of times people will say there is no income gap”(Puzzanghera), but there is. Women being equally qualified and skilled for the same job a man does is paid less than him.
Feminist theory shows the ways of a gender structured life . This culture is also displayed in Crime and Punishment by Sonya and Dunya. Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism that was well known in the 1970’s. Women would begin taking apart the classics and analyzing how the author portrayed women. The women in Crime and Punishment , especially Sonya and Dunya have a stronger state of mind and are able to handle the pressures and struggles of life better than the men in the novel.
Introduction In India, discriminatory attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and thus it affect the lives of both genders. Although the constitution of India has granted men and women equal rights, but gender gap still remains. Female discrimination violates human rights. These are mostly seen in family land sharing among sisters and brothers.
