Although Atticus thought that he educated them valuable lessons, the children would not able to understand what Atticus was trying to teach them because of their ages. Also, when Atticus punished Jem, Jem would feel unfair because he tried to protect and defend his father. (Rebuttal) Even though Jem tried to defend Atticus, Atticus should punish him because ruining and destroying the other’s properties is a wrong behavior. Also, Atticus has responsibilities to guide Jem in a right way. If Atticus just forgives him and let him destroy the yard, then Jem might think that causing problems are fine if he was supposed to protect someone.
