To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel about Scout and Jem and their story as they watch their small home of Maycomb, Alabama turn from slow and gloomy to a racially tensioned town. Before the action starts, the siblings meet Dill, who is fascinated with the mysterious Boo Radley, who never leaves his house and it is rumored that he killed his family. The action grows as a spark sends the story into its main act when Mrs. Maude’s home burns to the ground. As Scout watches the fire in awe, Boo sneaks out and covers her with a blanket. Scout is confused so she confronts her father Atticus, who is defending Tom in the case. Atticus explains that everyone should have a fair trial and that he will prove that Tom is innocent. As tensions rise, Atticus is threatened and treated harshly because he is defending a black man, but Atticus stays true to his promise of defending Tom and caries on. As the trial starts, Jem and Scout sneak into the colored section to watch and notice that Mayella is very nervous. She is always checking behind her to look at her father, Bob Ewell, who is the least respected man in the town. Atticus starts with simple questions and when he notices that she was getting uncomfortable he dig deep and proves that it was Bob who beat Mayella and blamed it on Tom. But even that couldn’t change the minds of the racist men of the jury who sentenced Tom to death for rape. One day, while outside playing, they find a little boy named Charles Baker Harris, also known as Dill. These three start to get into many shenanigans, including investigating the mystery of Arthur "Boo" Radley; he hasn't been seen in years. There are a lot of theories surrounding him and why he doesn't come out, but we finally find out why at the end of the book.

Bob’s writing allows Atticus to prove that he is left-handed and could be a possible suspect that hit Mayella. Atticus’ idea of where he is going with this accusation brings the people of Maycomb to notice that the Ewell’s have a bad reputation and they could very well be lying. In truth, the rape accusations are fictional, and are only brought up to hide the fact that Mayella’s father has been abusing her. Although everyone knows that Tom is innocent in their prejudice mindset, they refuse to show sympathy towards him because he is a ‘negro.’ At the end of the trial, it is decided that Tom loses the jury however, his lawyer is positive that they will have a good shot at the appeal.
Atticus is appointed a case by Judge Taylor to defend a black man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. Because of the racism and prejudice against black people, he believes that he will not win this case and could risk the life of Tom Robinson. Because of this case, Scout gets bullied by Francis about how his dad is defending a black man, Atticus later talks to Scout about how “[Tom Robinson] lives in [a] settlement behind the town dump….there’s been some high talk around the town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man” (Lee 86). Atticus knows that something bad can happen to him if he were to defend Tom Robinson but still does so because he has the courage to do it. After the trial had ended, Atticus was waiting for news but he did not expect something so terrible and heartbreaking, Tom Robinson, unfortunately, died after being shot several times.
Atticus agrees to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a white woman. Because of Atticus’s decision, the children are now abused by the other students at school. Alexandra, Atticus’s sister, comes to live with the Finches that summer. Atticus provides clear evidence that Mayella and her father, Bob Ewell are lying about the accusations. Mayella was caught by her father when Tom came over and was accused of rape.
When the Judge Taylor, Atticus, and Mayella have interview at the court, Mayella starts crying, because of her lies about Tom Robinson. When Mayella cries, Atticus doesn’t show that he feels Mayella is lying, because Atticus respects her. Additionally, Atticus doesn’t accuse Mayella for not telling the truth. Moreover, Atticus approaches Mayella with his courteousness by calling her “Ma’am.” Furthermore, Atticus respects Tom Robin, who seems like a criminal even though he is not.
Scout and Jem are forced to deal with racial slurs and insults because of Atticus ' role in the trial. Scout has a very difficult time not physically fighting with other children due to this. Tom is asfsd to be guilty, even after Atticus proves that Tom did not commit the crime. Atticus unintentionally offends Bob Ewell, the father whose daughter is accusing Tom.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the novel follows the life of the main character, Scout, from ages six to eight. In the book, Scout and her brother, Jem, initially have strange beliefs regarding the mysterious Arthur "Boo" Radley. But, due to various events; that takes place in Jem and Scout's lives, the siblings' beliefs have changed. Scout and Jem's moderately firm ideas of Boo Radley in earlier chapters have come; to deeply contrast their current viewpoints of him.
So when he was being accused for an unspeakable crime with Mayella when she was the one who tried to subdue him in kissing her and he rejected her you can’t imagine how he felt. Keeping this in mind think about when Atticus says to scout “You can never really understand a person… until you climb up into his skin and walk around in it.” (pg.90) and you were in Tom’s position you would feel horrible to have helped this person who is now trying to lock you up or give you the death penalty. Why would Mayella do this to him when he helped her and kept her company? Take a walk in her sink and you would see she was horribly lonely and was neglected all the time at home and then you did a unspeakable act of kissing a black you would want no one to know so you would call him a liar and say he did something horrible to her to get him out of the picture.

Through their relationship with Boo and Tom, Jem and Scout learn about racism and inequality that changes how they see the world. Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are two different people who share similar struggles with inequality throughout this story. Boo and Tom experience a form of racism and discrimination.
Scout matures through the novel, from her interactions with Boo Radley such as when Boo gives Jem and Scout some gifts by putting them in the knothole of
