Heroes are not invincible, and certainly are not the ones who always win; however, a hero is someone who, despite this, is courageous enough to fight for what is right. Atticus Finch, one of the most inspiring literary characters from the highly acclaimed novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is an example of such. This classic novel is told from the perspective of Scout Finch, Atticus’ daughter, a young girl who lives in the town of Maycomb County, Alabama, in the 1930s, a town where prejudice and discrimination is rife. Rather than succumbing to societal expectations and adopting the extreme animosity held by the other citizens, Atticus views and treats all with the dignity and respect that they are entitled to, guiding his

What is a hero? Is a hero someone who stands up for what he or she believes in, or someone who is idolized for their superior courage and outstanding achievements? Atticus is considered a role model in the eyes of a parent reading the novel, but what they do not know is how ineffective of a parent Atticus Finch really is. Atticus Finch is an ineffective parent because of his lack of safety for his children and the inability to control Jem and Scout outside of their home. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a role model not only for Scout and Jem, but for the town as a whole. He is unbiased and just in his values, and this carries over to his parenting with Jem and Scout. Atticus always listens to what his children have to say, and they greatly respect him for it. He instills in them that it is okay to stand up for what they believe in, even if the rest of society shuns them for it. They are taught to treat other people with respect and to always think before acting. Although Maycomb sometimes looks down upon Atticus, he is an exemplary parent because he has ingrained the values of respecting others, thinking before acting, and being oneself into Scout and Jem.
Atticus Finch: Good or Bad Father “Dad, you have to buy me this, my friend has this at school and it is SO cool. It only costs ten dollars, please.” A good father may be the one that always buys anything, and everything for their child/children but in reality, a father with good punishement, and teaching to do the right thing may be considered a good father. Atticus Finch may not be like your average everyday father. From Jem and Scout’s point of view, they do not see anything “wrong” with him.

Grant Wiggins is the most educated black man in the quarter and because of this his aunt, Tante Lou, has him try to obtain visitation privileges for Miss Emma’s sake.
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Being a hero doesn’t mean being “super”, it means having the courage to run towards danger when everybody else is running away from it. Heroism is the courage, the bravery to risk his/her life in order to save somebody else’s. In the article, Where I Find My Heroes, Oliver Stone states, “Who is heroic?

He has the courage to stand up for what he believes in, fights with reason rather than guns, and has utmost determination, making him a hero despite being just an average human being.
