There are always those well respected characters that mostly everyone is fond of in each book. In Harper Lee's fictional novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" it tells the story of a young girl named Jean Louise Finch, who goes by Scout. She experiences good vs evil, injustice, and racism all while growing up. She learns that these things happen all the time, all while learning life lessons from her father. Her father happens to be the character that mostly everyone is fond of. Atticus Finch is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a nineteen year old girl. Atticus Finch is a very tolerant and responsible man who treats everyone with respect.
Atticus shows that he is tolerant many times. He is tolerant when everyone says cruel things to him about defending Tom instead of exchanging words, Atticus walks away. If he was intolerant he would have picked a fight when Bob Ewell spit in his face and told him some hurtful things, instead Atticus got in his car and drove away. Atticus also attempted to teach his children Scout and Jem to be tolerant. Since he knew people would say hurtful things to them too, he told them "... You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don't let 'em get your goat"(Lee 101). Eventually Scout took his advice and walked away, when Cecil Jacobs was talking to her about Atticus.

Tom Robinson was introduced as the black man Atticus Finch, our main character, has to defend in the rape case against Mayella Violet Ewell. In Harper Lee’s novel to Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus finch portrays intelligence and a kind-hearted nature. Atticus is an extremely smart man; he is the town's lawyer which shows he has had far more education than most of the town. Further, he helps his children to read. His children, Scout and Jem state “We are far too old to settle an argument with a fist-fight, so we consulted Atticus”(Lee 1).
One of these characters is Atticus Finch. Atticus’ determination and bravery is shown when he agrees to take Tom Robinson’s case and intends to defend him fairly. “I am simply defending a Negro- his name is Tom Robinson. He lives in that settlement beyond the town dump.” , (Lee, 75).

Throughout the ages, humans have continued to struggle with the same issues. Many people find excuses for their failures instead of accepting their flaws. Many people struggle to be humble, noble, true to their beliefs, understanding of others, respectful, calm in the heat of the moment, along with many other things. It is something that everyone has to work on, but the struggles and discipline that comes along with becoming a better person often make people shy away. Regardless, when someone puts in the effort to become better, they can become the role model that everyone could look towards.
People's use of tolerance, discrimination, and integrity have changed tremendously in the past century. In the small town of Maycomb, Atticus, Scout, and several other characters face their own dilemmas that shape them as characters. Throughout the book, they display several different themes as they conquer these real-world problems. The town faces plenty of hardships throughout the course of the story, but always seems to overcome them. Harper Lee displays discrimination, tolerance, and integrity because they indicate the improvements and struggles people in the 1930’s faced, as well as help in order to change our current society.
As a father Atticus has done everything he can to maintain his children, Jem and Scout, informed of what really is like out there in the real world. Honesty seems to be Atticus rout when dealing with life. In times Atticus will lose trial but the courage he has won’t allow him to give up on innocent people, like Tom. Atticus is the definition of role model to follow. He’s a great father to his children showing the the truth will always push them forwards in life.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. This saying is true in many cases and happens to be true in To Kill A Mockingbird. Throughout the book you see children of characters start to grow up and act like their father. This essay will be looking at three families in To Kill A Mockingbird, the Finches, the Cunninghams, and the Ewells. These three families are key examples that a father’s influence has a significant influence on the character of his children.
Atticus’s parenting of Scout and Jem is very unique in that he treats his children as equal human beings, answering any question they have, and giving them advice when they need it. He uses all these things as an opportunity to pass his values on to Scout and Jem. He is happy to help people see a situation in a new way. Atticus uses this with the entire city of Maycomb as well as with his children. Furthermore, for all of his maturity towards Jem and Scout, he realizes that they are children and that they will make mistakes, they will also make different assumptions about different things.
