Atticus taught me many things about being courageous. For example, he knew he probably wasn’t going to win the Tom Robinson case yet he still gave it his all which showed his loyalty towards Tom. His children learned something from a great man like what color you are doesn’t define who you truly are inside. Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird.
Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird contains many different themes that create lessons for the characters to learn. The recurring idea that courage is a combination of physical and emotional strength is just one of the many themes the author includes in the novel. Through Ms. Dubose’s struggle to break her long-fought morphine addiction, the theme of courage is demonstrated for the first time in the novel. Further into the novel, Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson on trial even when he knows he is going to lose the trial. One of the last demonstrations of courage is when Jem risks his life to protect his sister from a mystery attacker.
. but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” The connection between songbirds and innocents is made explicitly several times in the book, Mr. Underwood likens Tom Robinson’s death to “the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children”, the moral imperative to protect the vulnerable governs Atticus’s decision to take Tom’s case. Atticus is constantly teaching his children and community about the importance of values and staying true to your
He is also one of the best lawyers is the county. Atticus is the most courageous character because He defended Tom Robinson (a black man) even when he was almost positive they would lose. Atticus is pretty much his own definition of courage, he said that “courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through, no matter what”. Atticus went against everyone and defended Tom. Atticus even stayed outside of the jail to help protect him before his trial.
Not to mention, he takes the case without outwardly pleading it is a hopeless cause. To show, Atticus defends Tom Robinson as he would defend any white man, and makes it his civil duty to do this man right. Coupled with Atticus’s personal beliefs, he never shows regret in his obligation to Tom Robinson and his family. In another instance, Atticus respected these citizens even before the case. Though the residents of Maycomb did not agree with him, Atticus stuck to his belief all men are created equal.
By this definition Atticus Finch is definitely a hero, he is always courteous of others and is a gentleman through and through. Judge Taylor expresses this thought during the trial when he claims “Atticus is always courteous to everybody” (Lee 207). This quote shows that Atticus is polite even to those he is cross-examining, when most lawyers are ruthless. Atticus is also a man who is kind at home as well, when nobody is watching. “For once in his life Atticus’s instinctive courtesy had failed him” (Lee 306).
In life, there are many people who influence others. Some are good influences and some are bad influences. The one person who influenced Christopher's life the most would have to be his father, Ed Boone a character from the novel the curious incident of the dog in the night-time written by Mark Haddon. In the book Ed Boone makes lots of mistakes that are completely understandable given his situation. He is still a fine father whose has unconditional love and commitment for Christopher which allows him to grow in spite of the numerous challenges he faces.
Not because he was bragging about his achievements, but because he actually achieved something that the people could respect and stand behind. Quiet people are often the most powerful because they lead their people by examples instead of words. The majority of To Kill A Mockingbird’s characters are very inspirational characters by not only what they say, but also what they do, like when Dolphus Raymond acts like a drunk so the town has a reason for his actions. The same goes for Emma Watson. Although she’s in the news for movies or for UN business she tends to stay out of the spotlight.
Scout showed the most braveness in the book and dill doesn’t have much since he only comes during summer. Atticus has three major parts where he shows braveness. He shows braveness when he decides to be a lawyer, when he shoots the dog, and when he takes Tom’s case. Atticus decides to be a lawyer instead of being a farmer like his dad. When Atticus shot the dog in the Mad Dog scene he was super brave and made Jem and Scout super proud, he got called
