Introduction; This paper intends to prove that a person’s looks are the most important characteristic when it comes to romantic relationships. This paper will specifically focus on the first contact between a person and a potential significant other, as it is that meetings outcome that allows for a romantic relationship to begin. It will also determine if other factors of interpersonal attraction influence the beginnings of a romantic relationship above that of a person’s looks, as well as refute arguments against the claim. It does this by looking at the other three factors of interpersonal attraction and deducing that while proximity and reciprocity are valid factors in forming long-term romantic relationships, they are not applicable to the first contact as they need either time, to allow exposure repeatedly, or trust, “you’ll scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours”. Similarity faced issues, as it needed a level of communication to be a relevant factor unless linked to physical attractiveness. This proves that physical attractions is the most important factor of interpersonal attraction. The paper then proved that similarity and physical attractiveness can be connected, and why, although similarity isn’t the most relevant factor in a romantic relationship, it is still of great significances when it comes to the physical attraction. Criticisms arouse, that many people discount good looks as an important characteristic when asked to rate them. This was done by first looking at the characteristics, and then comparing the results to research that proved that they are generally applied or stereotyped to attractive people, for example good health or a good social standing. Another criticism that focused on personal levels of good looks rather than external, argued that attractiveness cannot be the most important characteristic as it is only for the famous, this paper disproved this by referencing a study showing that medium levels of attractiveness showed the same response as high levels. Overall this paper proves physical attraction is the most important characteristic in romantic
Beauty can be defined in different ways: Beauty describes how anything in perspective like a face, an object, an action is adorable or pleasant. Beauty also refers to the person’s character, personality, or intellect. This topic of beauty affects all because in today’s culture, society judges appearances independently and seems to completely ignore what is portrayed inside of the person. In the essay, “A Woman’s Beauty: Put Down or Power Source?” Susan Sontag explains that for women, beauty is an occupation that they have to keep to maintain their financial situation.
Never judge a person by how they look, but by their personality. To begin, in the realistic fiction novel, Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, they are two friends, Max and Freak, with disabilities. Max is a very tall person who has a learning disability and Freak is not that tall and has morquio syndrome. They end up going on adventures and facing trouble. There are two themes that could be found throughout the book.
The book, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the poem The Courtship of Miles Standish surprisingly, have many things in common. The characters that are mere opposites are similar in more ways than you think. In the following paragraphs, we will explore the similarities and differences of these two books and their characters. First, we will compare and contrast the strategies and courtships of Ichabod Crane and Miles Standish.
How attraction is defined? Is it physical, or mental? Is it our own desire, or what society deems as desirable? Many people might think that women would give up their beauty to get better education or to have high positions. The thing that makes people think that way is gender identities, which are defined as some morals and behaviors that men and women should follow to fit into the society.

Looks do not make a person. In the novel Frankenstein, judgmental people and the way someone looked caused many deaths. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s monster experiences this prejudice. Although he looks ugly and scary, he only wants friends.
Why do so many people feel the need to judge others based on how they look? Judging others gives people a sense of honor because demeaning others can create a sense of security and identity. If one concludes who a person is merely on what they look like they will miss what is important, what their morals are, and what their intentions are. It takes an individual who has read the novel To Kill A Mockingbird to understand because it is a perfect example of treating others with respect and not determining who others are based on what they look like. Many characters in Lee’s
As promoted by the traditional commercials, men look for women with raven-like hair, emerald eyes, and a slender figure (Browne 39). The Victorian traditions encouraged women to maintain slim bodies and maintain long hair. Such a tradition prevails today as most of the men view slender women as attractive; hence, their preference for dating slender women to voluptuous ones (Sharp & Keyton 17-19). Conversely, the author claims that women want handsome, chisel-chinned CEOs looking forward to marry and have children after long romantic dating (Browne 39). Such an ideology conforms to the traditional postulations of physical traits of masculinity and the capacity of a man as the provider (Gaines 80-81).
In the essay What Meets the Eye, Daniel Akst argues that look or beauty does matter in the daily life, that is, people’s life can be largely influenced or even controlled by look. Through reading Akst’s essay, I completely understand how people have different perspectives of others, as many people pay attention to and worry about how they look in the daily life. And people tend to judge others by their beauty or looks to a large extent. Akst’s ideas quite conform to and reinforce Paglia’s points that pursuing and maximizing one’s attractiveness and beauty is a justifiable aim in any society, and that good surgery discovers reveals personality. Both of them hold the idea that beauty plays an important role in people’s life and it is significant to enhance one’s beauty and attractiveness.

In society, women are expected to appear their best at all times. “The fact that one of Connie's main concerns in life is picking up guys may imply that too many women make finding a man their primary goal in life” (Wilber). This is true because females spend most of their time trying to look pretty for a male's approval in hopes of finding someone to settle down with and build a life. But, when Connie goes out she is not going out to get to know the guys better, she is just going out to see and talk to cute boys. This symbolizes women’s sexual desires to men and how they start a relationship based on features.
One of the categories in being the ideal woman is being conventionally beautiful because, according to the media, a significant portion of a woman’s self-worth rests in appearance. This can be seen through women’s magazines in particular, which promote altering one’s appearance leads to the significant improvement of one’s “love life and relationships, and ultimately, life in general” (Bazzini 199). Therefore, the media presents a direct relationship with beauty and success: the more attractive a woman is, the better her life will be. Thus, a woman must the take initiative to look beautiful in order to be successful. Through the repetitive exposure of the same type of image in the media, what society considers beautiful often resembles a definitive checklist.
But when it encounters the ugly it shrinks back and rejects it and turns away from it and is out of tune and alienated from it.” (Plotinus 2) Yes, this completely makes sense! If I were to meet someone in a friendly manner at first, they may possess certain qualities that are eye-grabbing and that I deem “attractive” or “captivating” and I may feel some sort of connection almost immediately, whether it be friendly or something more, because of the two souls opening themselves up and welcoming themselves to one another and seeing “something akin to it or a trace of its kindred reality, is delighted and thrilled and returns to itself and remembers itself and its own possessions.” (Plotinus
When one first meet her, one has to admit, first thing they notice is her looks. Right? “wow she have it all” or maybe the opposite. Beauty for women may be easier for them, like getting out of an officer giving them a ticket or walking into a restaurant without a reservation. Beautiful women could get more smiles, more handsome men, and better treatment sometimes.
“Grace should be an adornment informing and accompanying all his actions, so that he appears worthy of the companionship and favour of the great” (55). A strong level of charm and attractiveness is an essential trait for a potential courtier. His idea of grace focuses highly on charisma, which should come as a natural characteristic within their persona. Genuinity is important because it ensures that the man who believes he is worthy of serving the courts does in fact harbor genuine grace.
