The Bread and Circus in Rome was bread and chariot races and gladiatorial games that filled the belly and distracted the mind, allowing emperors to rule as they saw fit. The Emperor Augustus was well aware of this risk and was keen to keep the poorest plebeians happy enough and reasonably well fed so that they would not riot. He began the system of state bribery that the writer Juvenal described as ‘bread and circuses’. Augustus came up with this so the Plebeians would not riot. This practice was used because people were born into their social classes and could not switch what one they were born into. The lower classes needed food to be provided to them if they couldn 't get it themselves. It offered the production of food, public baths,
To add on, the roles of the peasants was to give their services to nobles. Last but not least, the bottom dwellers
Augustus wrote the Deeds of The Devine Augustus, it was a first person account of his rule over Rome. It was written before his death in 14 A.D. Augustus wrote this document as part autobiography and part last will and testament. The main story line of The Deed of The Devine Augustus describes Augustus’ political career, his military success, and ultimately serves as propaganda to inspire the Romans to continue in the path of his empire.
On top of the peasants or other lower classes there were
Slaves were treated poorly. They only got fed peas corn and some meats. Slaves would mostly work outside in the barn or in fields as field hands. If they did, they did all the farming and cleaning. If they were a house slave
There were a lot of children in one family, so money was an issue which was why most children worked. They were at home or at the factories they didn’t go
Women/Kids – when a female was 15 – 16, the father would go out and find a husband for his daughter and if the girl had no father then the mother would negotiate on his behalf. Kids did not go to school, Karl kids were taught by there parents and Jarl kids were also taught by there parents or they hired
During this time period was the Age of Exploration, so new foods such as corn and potato were introduced from the new world which helped the lower class incorporate more nutrients into their diet. The society was divided into two classes, the nobility/gentry and the peasants/serfs. Both social classes were one of the important factors while developing hierarchy and order in the different countries. Western countries such as France influenced by religion and England dealt military, politics, and/or social issues. China’s government was also
The families were first altered because of the pay the man of the house was receiving. The low pay made it very hard to be able to afford a house and put food on the table. Mothers and children had to go to work just to pay for simple necessities. Most female workers performed unskilled or semi-skilled machine work but some worked in industries that demanded heavy labor. Some women, for instance, worked on railroads, while others were employed as machinists.
In Roman comedy, like in Greek comedy that came before it, Roman writers enjoyed to poke fun at social norms. Augustus sought to protect the Roman Empire’s longevity and in doing so elevated the power held by the paterfamilias. In a Roman family absolute authority is held by the father or the head of the household. The power of the paterfamilias was unrestricted and enabled him as the head of the house to control every aspect in the lives of his family. Most dramatically the form of this power was exercised in vitae necisque potestas or his ability to sentence his family members to death.
Through the years of 1750 to 1901, the journey of thousands of humans sailed out overseas. With many decisions, they all experienced something different, from those who were forced to leave, had to leave or chose to leave. The voyage of slaves, convicts and free settlers differed immensely, yet, they still had slight similarities. Kidnapped and forced into slavery, that was the early stages of becoming a slave. They were forced on to the ships then chained and bounded to each other as they sat, tightly packed inside and buckets used as toilets were shared among the slaves.
The peasants often gave chicken, eggs, etc. in payment to their lords. In addition to the serfs, there were also artisans and people who worked in the chapel (Document 2). All of the people within the manor were extremely important for the survival of all the social classes, and everyone depended on the hard work produced by the people who worked the land. Also, as trade and commerce began to grow, the lives of the people in the Middle Ages also changed.
For them, life was difficult. They had to work long, hard hours on the manor that belonged to their lord. Most peasants were farmers. Peasants did not have good food or clothing. They did not have the right to be educated.
The roles of the spectacles involved entertainment for the citizens of Rome, punishment to disobedient citizens or slaves, providing food, and allowing interaction between the people of Rome and their rulers. Citizens of Rome frequented the arenas to catch a glimpse of the famous gladiators who were cheered for either killing their fellow gladiators or beasts as a form of entertainment. The blood games were also used as an opportunity by the state to punish convicted criminals and slaves by feeding them to hungry beasts such as bear and lions. After the games, citizens of Rome would consume the meat of the deceased animals from the arena since some emperor would kill hundreds of animals in the arena. In addition, the spectacles in the arena brought together the citizens of roman ad their rulers, which was a perfect opportunity for the citizens to air their views or partake in riots until their demands were
Augustus had made many important reforms in his rule, by having to control everything in Rome and making the senators work for him to build and do the thing for him. The senates were an advisory body whose advice becomes law via the consuls, praetors, and by confirmation by the assemblies of the citizens in Rome. Augustus had mad the laws so strongly that if women or a man do anything behind his back, he willpower send them to a different region, and get them killed by putting them with the animals to die. When Augustus made the laws across he directly made his plans to the people to present his Tribunician
The effect of this was this became the dominate role for women and all the women did was have babies, take care of children, and certain task they were assigned for example cooking or gathering water. Another piece of evidence to support this is how even though the men had more priority over women some women had accepted this lesser role over time. “Although there were clear disadvantages to women, paradoxically, many of them enjoyed being provided for and complied to the female gender roles that had be reinforced within the group for years. As these expectations had been accepted as traditional, gender roles and stereotypes were internalized to the point where the men and women rarely butted heads over what had become social norms”. - http://ibthingsfallapart.weebly.com/children-and-gender-roles.html.
