For over 40 years the life and times of the Australian Bushranger, Ben Hall has held my imagination. My first introduction to the name Ben Hall came about by my father when on a long drive from our home in Queensland to our former Victorian home following my fathers service in Viet Nam, and our first opportunity as a family to visit my grandmothers and the wider family of Uncles, Auntys and Cousins, and to recover my sister who was holidaying at the family 's holiday home at Phillip Island. Early the next morning we packed the car and prior to hitting the road my father drove us out to the Forbes cemetary and to the grave of Ben Hall, where we stopped a short time, took some photo 's and Dad pointed out the grave of Ned Kelly 's sister Kate. After an uneventual trip following our stop at Forbes, we made Melbourne and had a fabulous holiday and recovered a sister who wanted to stay longer, as the summer on Phillip Island, was for us kids was the greatest. Not long after our return my father persented me with Frank Clunes account of Ben Hall in the Wild Colonial Boys, and I was

Intro: Between 1914 and 1918, Australia’s involvement in the war changed many lives of people from all different ranks, on the battle grounds and the family’s back home in Australia. Bruce Scates declaration that the Great War as nothing but a loss that tore Australia to pieces is, in part, a very truthful one. The glorified ANZAC Legend celebrated annually by this country overlooks the negative aspects and the damage that WWI inflicted on all concerned. The misdemeanors of war and its aftermath had devastating effects on those who supported the soldiers and the sliders themselves who often lost their support to the war and faith in their leaders. The ANZAC legend is one of great courage and unshakeable spirit, and it continues to help being a young nation together in celebration. For Ben Hall a young man, the evolving and progressive society of Australia presented an opportunity for the adventurous to have ago and to build a solid foundation for the future without the social judgments that long been a handicap for those of limited means and wherein some sections of Australian society there still retained the structured aristocracy of the old country where title and inherited wealth determined a path of diversity for those that were termed privileged, this, of course, excluded Ben Hall.
