The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women. There is a scene in the movie that shows a white women jumping off of a cliff and plummeting to her death than to be raped by a black man.
These slave codes placed harsh restrictions on slaves, depriving them of their rights and turning them into properties. However, slavery has been abolished in the United States of America thanks to many abolitionists. Many slaves are now free men and women. Nothing can be done to repair the wrongs of slavery, for it will always remain in the past. Now, Americans need to look to the future where slavery does not exist, where black and whites are found equal, and where racist is not a factor.
The culture and practices of their time avoided them any critical analysis of their status in the society. In fact, even when slaves started revolts and violent riots, there actions where only confined to that single occasion. Overall, there was no bigger picture in their eyes on the brutality of slavery. The conditions and the cultural understanding of that time were so clear-cut and strong on the idea of blackness and slavery, that most slaves probably even believed that they were racially inferior to the white master and that their role in the society was to serve. Mostly because the wonderful ideas of civil disobedience brought by Rosa Parks in 1955 where far from the slaves in the plantations, who lived centuries before the declaration of human rights and the abolition of slavery.
Satire is once again used to portray slavery in this novel. For instances, Huck’s father Pap should have been protecting Huck instead of being drunk and abusing Huck. On the other hand, Jim who was a negro slave has more compassion and consideration towards Huck. This shows the foolishness of slavery. Because of Slavery prevalent in that period of time, the slaves were considered to be “mere property” without any emotions or personalities.
Whites were able to maintain their power by keeping their slaves as uneducated as possible. Slaves were dehumanized by being sold next to livestock and split from their families like animals. By retaining basic information, such as the identity of the slave’s parents or their birthdays, the whites were able to deprive the slaves of any sense of identity or individuality. Once slaves had this knowledge they might begin to fight more diligently for their natural rights. Slave owners feared that if slaves became educated and “waken to a sense of their rights, and of the injustice done them” (Douglass 14), they would eventually revolt and want to simply be treated like a human being.
Aquinas was also of the opinion that the children of a slave mother could themselves be enslaved notwithstanding that they had not committed any personal sin themselves. According to Aquinas, theft is committed by anyone who persuades a slave to escape on the basis that the slave’s master has a right to that slave’s labor even though the salve himself is not a
The individuals who were slaves were "captured in warfare, some were debtors, others were criminals" (Clark, 16). The slavery was temporary and never passed down to the child. As well as, the slaves can work into their freedom, and the slaves can get married into the family that held them. There were bad parts to this type of slavery as well because some slaves were sacrificial death, woman and children were in demand for labor or even any sexual purpose. Even though this is bad on its own the Triangular Trade is deemed much worse for multiple reasons.
The Great Seal was first used to the reverse of the $1 certificate in 1935. When America became a new nation, the Continental congress formed a committee to ¨Prepare a device for the seal of the United States of North America¨. The Great Seal contains ten features of thirteen. After all that the thirteen colonies formed a new nation. The meaning of the Seal is a phrase that is used both for the physical seal itself.
Throughout the novel the relationship between Jim and Huck grew to the point where Huck no longer cared about the repercussions that came with helping a runaway slave. Huck was even willing to help Jim escape the owner to which he was sold to by the king. Huck was a loyal friend to Jim as was Jim to Huck. At first, Huck saw Jim as a runaway slave who didn’t really matter because he was black. Since Huck was young the idea that slaves were beneath him had been implemented and he believed it because society upheld this idea.
