In this book, Avi included many themes including freedom. Freedom played a big role, such as in the beginning, Father Quinel was talking to Crispin and telling him to leave the village and find another one and stay there for a year and a day to gain freedom. In reply, Crispin said that freedom had nothing to do with him. That shows that he doesn't think that he deserves freedom, or doesn't even know what it is. Shortly after that event, Avi goes ahead and introduces the theme again, but in a different. What had happened was that Bear made Crispin take an oath to mark himself as his servant. Before this, Crispin had slightly had freedom, but then it Crispin lost his chance. In this event, Avi is trying to show that freedom doesn't just float
