Dear Mom,
I have recently read a book called “Awakening the Dragon by Arelene Chan”. The story behind the Dragon Boat Festival is really moving and interesting.
Do you know the historical belief of the dragon? Ancient China believed that in each river or sea, there was a dragon. When the dragon was mad, it made storms and floods. So, the ancient Chinese thought they needed to make the dragon happy. They made dragon boats and used them for dragon boat racing. They also thought that the sound of drums and the beautiful shape of the boat would make the dragon happy.
Then, there were six warring kingdoms in China. The most powerful kingdoms were Qin and Chu. There was an advisor called Qu Yuan in Chu. The king trusted him the most. One day, Qin offered a peace agreement for Chu to sign. Qu Yuan didn’t know it was a trap and advised the king to sign it. However, soon Qu Yuan found out that it was a trap. He persuaded the king to cancel it but the king didn’t listen to him and forced him to get out of this kingdom. Qu Yuan was really disappointed. He stayed in the forest. After nearly twenty-five years, Qu Yuan heard that Kingdom Chu was conquered by the army of Qin. He lost all his hope. He tied himself on a heavy rock and jumped into the river. When the villagers of the Chu kingdom discovered

I have gained a lot from it. Not only have I learnt a lot of historical facts, my word search and reading skill have also improved. I need to read many sentences and look up the new words in the dictionary in order to have a better understanding of the content. This is a good way of improving my English as well as increase my knowledge of Chinese legends.
I definitely love Dragon Boat Festival more than before after knowing the story behind this festival. I would really suggest you to read it.
Your son,
Oliver

What differs is the relationship between the dragon and Beowulf. The movie describes the dragon as Beowulf's son, born due to his affair with grendel's mom. The dragon in the movie represents failure. Beowulf feels that it is necessary to kill the dragon, but by taking down his son he also took his life doing it. The Epic, explains that the dragon attempts to attack the geats but has nothing in relation to Beowulf.
The movie “Awakenings” was based on a true life story written by Oliver Sacks, MD. The movie’s screenplay was written by Steve Zaillian, and directed by Penny Marshall. Awakenings was been out in cinemas in the year 1991. It is about the Encephalitis epidemic that spread in the summer of 1920s. Oliver Sacks is a neurologist fictionally portrayed as Malcolm Sayer by the actor Robin Williams.
Dragons Growing up, everyone has heard tales of the mythical beasts that breathe fire and cut through the blue skies with magnificent wings. The dragons were most likely were either terrorizing villages or befriending the protagonists of bedtime stories. Throughout the stories, dragons have similar concepts and some completely opposite ones. Smaug the dragon from The Hobbit, St. George’s dragon, and the Midgard serpent, also known as Jormungand are some examples of dragons told in these tales. Their differences range from the elements they represent, personalities, and physical appearances.
The bird is often used throughout The Awakening as a symbol of Edna Pontellier and Mademoiselle Reisz, and the struggles that they face during Edna’s awakening. This symbol functions to enhance the women's characters by magnifying the desire for solitude and provide a deeper context on the endeavor that many women faced during the Victorian Era as they were pressure to follow the same rules. The opening scene of The Awakening is important to understanding the complex symbol of the caged bird. Madame Lebrun, the owner of the cottages on Grand Isle, cares for two birds, a green and yellow parrot and a mockingbird, that hang on the either side of the door to her house.
The Yuan dynasty was a vast portion of the extensive Mongol empire, mostly residing in China. It was created by Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan. It lasted from 1271 AD to 1368 AD. The Mongol empire became the Yuan Dynasty. The territory stretched across all of modern day China.
China, up until the Qin Dynasty, consisted of independent states controlled by kings fighting each other for land and power. This time period was called The Era of Warring States, which lasted two hundred years. After this time, the Qin Dynasty rose to power. They conquered all other dynasties, and established a centralized government, unifying China for the first time. The dynasty that succeeded the Qin, the Han, continued the centralized government and they started a westward expansion that would encourage trade and cultural diffusion.
“The things happened in Ming dynasty” is a famous network novel. Daily and humorous words make this history book not that sterile, indeed they also bring more students and novel lovers to read the book. The first main role Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of Ming dynasty, was once the younger son of a starving farmer. However, after a drought, all Mr Zhu’s parents and elder brother starved to death. With the pressure of the social situation, Zhu Yuanzhang was forced to go toward rebellions instead of living cozily.

The basis of the dragon developed through the Totem Worship Theory. As an aboriginal icon of the Chinese nationality, it dates to the Neolithic period. Consequently, the sacred animals depicted in the legend refer to creatures that bring plenty, success and moral fortune. Its generosity signifies prominence, decency and sanctification; it symbolizes merit, valiancy and confidence, heroism, determination, dignity and holiness found within civilization. However, the dragons of this specific culture are grounded with the depiction of known creatures.
The difference in Dragons between traditional Eastern and Western cultures Pre-Workshop Early dragons in English literature, such as the dragon from St. George and the Dragon, were, as shown in Dragons in English, generally evil animals. They stayed holed up in their mountains, seeking treasure, eating knights and capturing princesses to their heart’s content. This type of dragon is still prominent in Western literature, such as the greedy old dragon in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis, and the characters of Glaurung and Smaug from Tolkien’s writings. The same time period as the Opium Wars and the opening of Japan included a shift in Western dragon writings as well. The influence of Oriental mythology, most notably dragons, brought
Dragon boats are human propelled water vessels that are traditionally decorated with the image of the dragon. Though the dragon boat races originated in Asia and the boats were first produced in China’s southern Guangdong Province, dragon boat races have expanded across the globe. They are popular in America today as well, they even have their own racing circuit. One other way that the Chinese Dragon has carried on with time is its inclusion in festivals and dances. The Chinese Dragon is a central part of festivities that take place for Chinese New Year.

There is dragon folklore in nearly every culture, even though the two protruding myths originated from European and Asian dragons. There are references to dragons in the Bible, Indian and African cultures also. In the Western custom, dragons are seen as dangerous creatures that need to be slaughtered. The Eastern traditions perceive dragons more as guardians and need should be honoured. Dragons can be found in stories and represented in art all through history.
