First, the statements, “Social media creates communication barriers,” and “Social media restrain people from sharing their ideas,” has earned 20% of the votes or 8 out of 40 people voted for it. It can be said that students sees the use of social media as a tool brings up walls on the freedom of people to communicate which hinder them from sharing their minds. The statement, “Social media interferes with the way we converse,” earned 33% of the votes or 13 out of 40 people voted for the statement. Perhaps, students are aware of the alterations in our way of conversing which is initially brought by the frequent use of social media. However it somehow increases their self-image whenever they receive likes.” Unlike the former’s opinion, all the other interviewees honestly said yes and agreed that yes, social media had affected their social life both positively and negatively. They are affected positively because they are able to communicate and keep in touch with acquaintances and relatives at long distances. As seen in Figure 4 above, the five student respondents listed having easier communication to people of long distances as the benefit they get from social media use. Also, they added that social media use made them more vocal of their feelings and allowed them to express more of themselves. For the drawbacks on the other hand, they lacked sleep due to addiction and became less of a personal talker.
For the fourth question for the students, “Why do you use social media?” According to them, they use social media for communication and entertainment uses. First, they are able to keep in touch with friends and keep themselves up-to-date about the latest happenings. Also, since social media use had been a trend, one interviewee acknowledged that peer pressure had brought him into the use of social media.
Lastly, the fifth question was, “Are you aware of the limitations of using social media?” All students answered yes and justified that, as responsible citizens, they are aware of their limitations of using social media. They only use sometimes but they know their limitations of what to use and when they should stop and knows what they should prioritize more. They do all important things first than anything else, “Needs before Wants” as the saying
