Introduction Waste Management is the steps the country takes to recycle or dispose of waste. Yet is waste management under control in the Bahamas? As one of the major destination for tourism the Bahamas is not as eco-friendly as it should be and this should not be the case because what would happen if the Bahamas natural resources were destroyed? So what is the Bahamas doing to ensure that a catastrophe does not occur in the Bahamas? The Bahamas has implemented the use of dumpsite, but are these dumpsite helping the problem or causing the problem. Landfills are disposable units created man it is use by proper burying the waste. In the Bahamas there are landfills on every island but in New Providence there is one for the whole island which …show more content…
The amount of destruction one landfill can cause to a human life and the environment is too much to say that landfills are actually beneficial to the country. Landfill is actually a thorn to the early side and to any country that harbor’s this waste management system. The sooner the system is eradicated from this world the better it will become. Runoffs, is the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of a section of land, building or structure (Webster dictionary). However, it does sound like something that can devastating thing but it is. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about landfills is a hole which is dug and all the waste produce that is collected is thrown in the hole until management seeks to do something about it. However, there are many things that can happen during this period on waiting, and one of those thing can be rain. In every county and every land there is something called ground water, and many country use as a main source of life. Ground water are formed via two way one is by steams the other is by rain fall; because of …show more content…
The proper way a landfill is supposed to be manage is by a proper burial; however, in the Bahamas it is know that the burning is used to get rid of the waste which bring us to air pollution. The burning of the garbage disposal beings forth the many condition because of the fumes being produced by the fires. These fume are extremely harmful to human and can cause the life expectancy of a human to shorten. There are also the gas that is release in land fill one of these gases is call Methane which is naturally generated from bacteria metabolizing organic matter. It also potent in the greenhouse effect; however despite this gas being a part of the gas produce the gas itself is very dangerous: It is a fire hazard and can even be explosively because it colorless and odor less which mean the gas is often not noticeable, which mean if the land fill is not properly manage the landfill can cause a fire. According to Larry Smith the last time the dump explodes was March of 2014 which mean there is a change for the dump to explode again. Also another aspect in the smoke and the fumes it is depleting the ozone layer with this and the fumes it can cause a great increase in the cancer
The broad plateau at its summit is large enough to hold Dodgers Stadium with plenty of room for parking. Set to close this October, it is the country’s largest active landfill. Most of the 130 million tons of waste buried for eternity beneath its lumpy slopes could have been recycled” (1). With the use of words such as “trash mountain”, the reader can greatly visualize America’s landfilling problem and the importance of recycling.
Summary: The article Stormwater Runoff is about unfiltered water that can harm the earth. This water travels throughout the earth in the ground, streams, lakes, oceans, roads, parking lots, rooves, etc., picking up chemicals, pollutants, and more. This can cause a lot of harm to the earth. All of this starts with the water cycle.
Topic: This research proposal relates closely to the textbook, Garbology, Our Love Affair with Trash. Edward Humes discusses how current landfills are constructed to protect the environment from leachate in several chapters, but in Chapter 4, “The Last and Future Kingdom,” he writes about the dangers of landfills built before the 1990s (2013). Landfills built before the 1991 regulations are not required to install barriers that protect the groundwater from carcinogens. According to the American Cancer Society, prolonged exposure to carcinogens in the environment can lead to cancer ( “Known and Probable,”2017).
Manure and chemical filled lagoons are a common component of industrial farming. A colossal amount of waste is produced from COFAs, therefore it has to go somewhere. That somewhere would be the prior mentioned lagoons which are then sprayed or leaked into the soil. Contaminated soil can affect both ground and surface water. The runoff can go in two directions; either absorbed into the ground or washed into rivers or lakes in the surrounding area.
Animal waste runoffs or feedlots are farms that specialize in cattle or hogs. These animals are stayed in a very small area of land and they are raised on hormones and grains that make them big and fat for slaughter. Feedlots help provide a lot of protein in America but feedlots contain a lot of the animals poop and other bad substances that can pollute the air and the water with their runoff. Pros of having feedlots is that they produce meat that satisfies U.S. consumers, they’re efficient, and cheap. Cons of having feedlots is that manure contains nitrogen and phosphorus; if not managed properly, they can pollute the nearby lakes, streams, rivers, or oceans, and antibiotic use increases genetic resistance to bacteria in the human body.
Sometimes our waste overflows into the trenches and we have to live with it. This can lead to various conflcitions such as diseases and other
Flood hazards are present in all types of environments ranging from deserts to tropical rainforests and even developed cities, however what distinguishes the three are their individual ability of naturally preventing floods and mudslides from occurring. In deserts, most of the ground absorbs the rain and in the forests tree roots keep the ground from turning into mudslides but cities have to route the rain into reservoirs, basins and drains because impermeable pavement denies the soil access to soak up the rain. Location is important when choosing where to buy a home and it is useful to know the flood prevention systems your watershed uses to protect homes. The Los Angeles watershed is eight-hundred and thirty-four square miles and makes use of the Los Angeles River as a storm drain that leads to the Pacific Ocean.
Id. Because of the vast population of people living in these cities, any mismanagement of the waste could lead to catastrophic results. Further, without a holistic system in place in these cities, the system could be abused, manipulated, and exploited. But by running the only facilities in these cities, the state can effectively manage the system for the benefit of all.
Dumpster diving poses many potential health and safety risks. Sifting through the garbage and eating food inside a dumpster without knowing where it has been is a risky behaviour. The health risks are high for those who eat discarded food out of necessity, such as homeless people Dumpster diving can be a controversial topic. Many times, one will either love it or hate it.
On a daily basis Puerto Rico’s shores suffer severe damage by waste created by negligent people who have no awareness whatsoever about the importance of ecological preservation. The islands
In the beginning of the film, we are shown what Earth looks like. It is critisizing the amount of excess and waste produced by humans on Earth by using exaggeration, showing the enormous buildings being built out of garbage (Stanton 3:27). These buildings help us interperet how much humans have consumed and produced so much waste that it has covered the entire
In “The Hidden Life of Garbage,” Heather Rogers writes about the waste disposal in the United States and how dangerous is getting. Land dumping has been the main disposal method for many years because of the low cost. She writes how landfill is a designed construction in which the trash is far away from the environment. Therefore, isolation is accomplished with a bottom liner and a daily covering of soil. She also says that a sanitary landfill uses a clay liner to isolate the trash from the environment.
Waste Management Inc Is a company that is try to achieve a “zero waste’ in North America. It was founded in 1971 by Wayne Huizenga and Dean Buntrock. They provide services for: • Waste • Recyclables • Yard debris • Hazardous materials collection, • Hauling, treatment and disposal • Dumpster rental • Portable toilet rental • Security services
Recycling reduces the rate of pollution, and pollution affects human conditions. As an example, in a landfill, the chemicals that are decomposing are releasing air toxins, harming human's senses. Hydrogen sulfate gases are an example of harmful chemicals, and these gases can cause respiratory problems and irritation in the eyes and nose. When the waste material that could be recycled is burned, that process also releases a whole mass of toxins that people breathe. Finally, recycling helps people in terms of health and
Industrial and capital hubs in developing countries are similarly characterized by multiple urban sprawls, informal settlements and overcrowding. The local governments or municipalities in many developing countries are highly challenged by mainly poor or weak policy and legislative provisions to regulate and enforce waste management guidelines. They also lack adequate funding and the correct capacity in terms of waste management personnel. All these challenges lead to situations where these local authorities are failing to take effective decisions with regards to solid waste management. It is worth noting that the decisions which municipalities are facing in terms of managing solid waste are not only difficult and capital intensive but they impact greatly on the natural environment as well as on social lives of people, therefore solutions to this issue are a matter of
