Zoe first explains the meaning of “Ban the box” law. And she is trying to explain why we should not see first at criminal record of any person in case of job and housing. Using this line “An estimated 70 million people in the United States - nearly one in three adults - have a prior arrest or conviction record….”(Zoe Melissa Polk, 2016 ) She is trying to explain that it's the common thing to have the criminal record in the USA. Furthermore, she asserts that San Francisco is using “Ban the box” law. According to this law, while providing jobs and houses no one will check on the criminal background of that candidate. Hence, in the case of jobs or housing, no one refers criminal record. Its logic to explain that they have solved the problem of housing and job for most of the people. Now she is using another logic that San Francisco have solved the problem for people who has a previous criminal record. As no one is looking at those records everybody has the equal chance for jobs and housing, which proves the title of the article which is “San Francisco Gives all a fair chance at jobs, housing” (Zoe Melissa Polk, 2016). She is giving the survey values like “.. nearly one in three adults..”(Zoe Melissa Polk, 2016) in the article to win the trust of
This helps the argument because it shows that America’s legal system is corrupt and people are not scared to do what they do. These two overall strengthen the argument because the article uses statistics and facts to support

According to the text, “The Rand study, conducted from September 2021 through October 2022, draws no conclusion on the accuracy of LAHSA’s estimate of the total number of homeless people in Los Angeles County last year, 69,144.” (Doug Smith) This means that the number of homeless people in Los Angeles is way too high to possibly be able to end homelessness. This is significant because even though the homelessness numbers may be high, Karen Bass is doing everything in her power to get everybody off of the streets, and surprisingly, it’s working. In conclusion, the homeless numbers may be high, but with Karen Bass, these people can be placed into homes as quickly as
Fallacies in 12 Angry Men 12 Angry Men- a 1957 film, rather a courtroom drama, is full of emotions represented in arguments and intellectual brainstorming. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film is an example of intellectual art. The film is based the story of a 18-year old slum boy who was on trial for killing his father by stabbing him. The judges, after seeing all the evidences and witnesses, actually leave the decision to the jury, to decide whether the boy was guilty or not. Also, if the jury decides that the boy is guilty, he would have to face the electric chair.
The Declaration of Independence is an extremely important document to the United States. Thomas Jefferson receives the most credit for writing the declaration, however he was assisted by five other men that were apart of the Constitutional Congress. They wrote the declaration to persuade the colonist to break free from Britain. The Declaration of Independence uses numerous persuasive appeals and language, including parallelism, pathos, and ethos. Parallelism is “a pattern in writing in which words and phrases are similar in structure, one echoing another.”
The knowledge of ethos, logos, and pathos develops and improves yourself as an analytical reader by recognizing the appeals the author uses throughout their text for the readers. It helps reveal the author’s approach in their writing, such as appealing to the reader’s emotions, setting themselves as an credible and reliable source, or uses facts and data to back up their approach. The most difficult thing an author can do when telling a story, is attracting an audience, and maintaining the audience’s engagement. In Serial, while telling the story of Adnan Syed, Sarah Koenigs attracts the audience with her purpose which is proving that Adnan Syed was wrongfully convicted and isn't completely guilty. Sarah maintains the attention of her audience by using emotional, and logical appeal, while also establishing credibility. In other words she uses the rhetoric made up of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos.
How do these things appear similar to chronic homelessness? They cannot be explained by a bell curve; the LAPD police department only has a small portion of officers who are chronically brutal, while only a few cars out of several hundred or thousands omitted too much admissions. So his point is you can’t punish all the officers over a few bad ones and you can’t punish all automobile drivers in Denver because of a few. So why lump all homeless into the same category. Instead address the ones that pull the most from the system, those who are chronically homeless and spend more time and money on be admitted and readmitted to local hospitals and
In this poem the writer uses imagery to create logos, uses connotation convey ethos,
Couple examples of logos was when Skloot’s mentions, “According to Howard Jones and other gynecologic oncologists I talked with, the correct diagnosis wouldn’t have changed the way Henrietta’s cancer was treated”(Skloot 172) and “In 1928 a German virologist named Harald zur Hausen discovered a new strain of a sexually transmitted virus called Human Papilloma Virus 18 (HPV-18).'' (Skloot 212) She uses reliable sources and discreetly informs the reader that she isn’t saying things out of thin air but instead she uses proper sources to validate her points in her novel. She uses logos by discussing scientific information and explanations, as well as the degree of Henrietta’s impact on
Criminal Homeless Imagine yourself without a job and receiving a final note from your bank stating that you only have a week to dislodge. In consequence, you become homeless as a bug of society and if you sleep in any bench or under a bridge, you will end up in jail. Many people have been suffering such cruel reality due to their poverty. Barbara Ehrenreich, a political activist and author in her essay “Is it Now a Crime Being Poor?” discusses the problems of the US correctional system about the treat of homeless people. She explains how they are sent to jails for minor crimes.
Argumentative Text Essay In the book Nickel and Dimed, written by Barbara Ehrenreich, the author argues how challenging it is to live in a life of poverty. To prove to herself as well as others that this statement is accurate, she makes the decision to experience this lifestyle firsthand by taking low-wage jobs and recording the results. Ehrenreich took on jobs including a maid service, waitressing, and assisting the nursing home to make enough money for a place to sleep and food to eat. The work’s central argument is the fact that minimum and low wage workers face a myriad of difficulties in getting by in America; they receive very low pay, harsh treatments from their employers, and the inability to have an actual life.

The picture I chose, shows an image that is in the public eye of today’s society, the image of smoking and how people can be affected by it. In this picture, viewers can see how smoking can really affect one’s life and how the addiction can be harmful to not only the outside of the body, but also the inside. This photo shows a controversial side of the appeal that people become addicted to cigarettes and, even after trying to go cold turkey, some people still cannot get over the addiction. The first thing that is noticed is the noose. The noose is being wrapped around the woman’s neck comparing the cigarette to the noose in attempt to show death.
