CAUSE Bankok has two main problems, firstly, Bangkok has an economy which is growing very fast. In the past few years there has been a very big increase of factories (nowadays there are 1,800 official factories), water distilleries, paper and rice mills, and private companies present in Bangkok: the country is trying to industrialize. Secondly, this city is built on loose, waterlogged sediments. These are wildly unstable foundations, that are severely fragile, and any sort of interference with the them can cause a rupture or segmentation in the base-level of the city. At the same time, industries only account for thirty percent of Bangkok’s water pollution: private individuals account for the rest of these stakes. In main focus, there is an absence of any sort of garbage collection or sewerage system. This has lead to people using canals as sewage and garbage dumping sites, as well as places to wash their clothes. In summary, all this activity has resulted in major water pollution. EFFECT The effects on the city and water supply have been enormous.To start with, the means of water supply have been transformed into open sewers. The consequence of people using water canals to clean their clothes is that the detergent used has spread. The detergent cannot dissolve due to the concentration of chemicals in the already contaminated water, and spreads throughout the canal and kills fishes and other living organisms. As for the waste produced by industries and factories, lots of this waste contains heavy metals: when it is dumped into the open canals, these toxic, poisonous metals are dumped along with it. One of the most toxic metals is mercury, which can have very serious side effects if ingested in excess, including paralysis, liver and kidney failure, and death.…show more content…
In most cases, this mercury is carried by fish living in the contaminated waters. In all, there are more than four hundred industrial plants found along the banks that contribute to this dumping, and therefore contribute to the poisoning of millions of people. Another contamination to the water has been fertilizer runoff, which has lead to an increase in the nutrient levels of water weeds. The spread of fertilizer has also affected the spread of Algal blooms, which have grown to cover rivers, causing for a decrease in the flow of water, making it more difficult for pollutants to be flushed away. In terms of the water, the levels of certain indicators are 40 times higher than recommended by the World Health Organization.
