Every year many people around the world deliver speeches and other gatherings that are significant to the September 11th anniversary. On September 11, 2009 President Barack Obama delivered his 9/11 Pentagon Memorial Speech in Arlington, Virginia. This speech was primarily for President Barack Obama to give his remarks for the 8th year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks. This message was targeted to all who were affected from this day. President Obama diligently expressed his remorse and provided encouragement in a rhetorical speech involving examples of logos, pathos, and ethos.
Historical Context
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. During the attacks, there were 2,996 people killed and more than 6,000 others wounded. Majority of the speech sparked up emotions but there were certain phrases that stood out. President Obama said things such as “No words can ease the ache of your heart” this definitely shows sympathy. It also brings an idea that he has attempted to put himself in their shoes. Another thing he said was “after all our suffering, God and grace will restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” This emotion because it gives the audience hope and feeling that the current pain will not last always.
Ethos
Ethos seeks to persuade the reader that the writer/speaker can be trusted and believed due to his/her noble character or ethical ways in which he/she is presenting ideas. An example of this appeal mentioned such as “Mindful that the work of protecting America is never finished, we will do everything in our power to keep America safe” Being president, this shows that he can be trusted with this statement because he hasthe authority to fight for our country.
