III.Pre-colonial Philippines (on culture and life ways) William Henry Scott’s book Barangay

a.Looking into the Preface or the introductory section of the book. What was/ were the author’s objective/ s in writing the book and did he achieve that/ those objective/s? The main objective of William Henry Scott in writing the book is to answer the question, “What did the Spaniards actually say about the Filipino people when they first met them?”. Another objective of the book is to let the readers know the life and culture in the 16th century of the country particularly in Visayas. This book also shows the life of the Filipinos even before the colonizers came, the migration in the country and the word “barangay.”

Please cite two examples. The society before were led by datus but when the Spaniards came to colonize us, one Spaniard became the leader in the whole country and the datus became only the subleader and follows the order of those who are higher in rank. In modern times, it still exists on the country, the President is the leader of the whole country, and there are government officials below him, like senators, governors, mayors and barangay officials. Another ultra-liberal cultural practices that were eradicated during colonial period and re still quite non-existent at the present, is the gender inequality. Before the Spanish era in the country, men and women have the same rights and benefits. It made me realize that the Indios or the early Filipinos are not that uncivil and pitiful since they already made a life and culture of their own and so I conclude and agreed to what Rizal’s pre-colonial view that the country even before the Spaniard’s colonization, already has its own progressing civilization with its own culture and virtues. If there are two old aspects of the pre-colonial lifeways, I wish to be still retained and present, that would be the natural science of the Indios, even though the world today are at its worst conditions and today’s weather is unpredictable and also I want to taste and eat the food and delicacies of the older
