Nevertheless, Luther rejecting a venerated human leader, believed that everyone should be able to read the bible. In reaction, the Catholic Church allowed a vernacular bible, so that it didn’t look like it was taking advantage of its followers. This is further evidence that the Counter Reformation was simply an act to cover their
Martin Luther believed that salvation wasn’t reached by the traditions that Church taught to follow but by “Faith alone, grace alone, Scripture alone” a saying that is used to summarize his ideal. What triggered his will to speak out about his new understanding was when Pope Leo X authorized the selling of indulgences, a document that if purchased will shorten the amount of time one spends in the purgatory. Other factors of anticlericalism were also important in the start of his protest against the Catholic Church, but the sale of indulgences that was even conducted in his hometown made it clear to him that Church does not care about the poor or the people in general but rather wants to advance its grip in power. For the above reasons, Luther believed that a change in the customs of the Catholic Church must take place. However English monarch Henry VIII had individual reasons for such an inspired fight for the separation from the church.
The Jesuits main purpose was to practice and then teach the lessons of God to people who did not know about Christianity, that included Japan, China, Paraguay and North America. With these new missionaries traveling across the world, they were able to convert many people to Catholicism, and gain back the followers the church had lost during the Protestant-Reformation in Europe.
Prior to 1550, the European continent was dominated by Catholicism and had been for centuries. However, Protestantism first introduced by Martin Luther had begun to make inroads in the Holy Roman Empire and Nordic countries. Despite the growing popularity of these new religions, the majority of monarchs saw religious diversity as a weakness. Instead, most rulers pursued Religious uniformity to ensure political stability and strength. Examples of monarchs attempting to achieve religious university abound from Charles V in the Holy Roman Empire and Spain, to Rome, and to England.
Luther thought the Catholic Church and their popes were out of hand and should not control the people as much as they did. The Church created indulgences for the people involved with the church can use when they sin. Instead of doing penance they would take indulgences and give money to the church instead of praying. The popes and the church does not have the decisions between on who goes to purgatory or not. Gender roles of Europe changed because of the Protestant Reformation.
The Catholic Church’s flawed ideas on how people should prove themselves worthy of God’s protection eventually led to public disapproval. One man, named Martin Luther, had an idea to denounce the method of the Catholic Church that would influence the world and change Christianity forever. When the Catholic Church was first formed, its goals were to spread and to help people follow
To clarify, zodiac signs are linked with astrology, a major field within science. Johann Regiomontanus was an intelligent astrologer during the Renaissance, specifically during the Scientific Revolution. With the impact of humanism, Regiomontanus was inspired to study astrology, and he discovered zodiac signs, which are still used today. If humanism was not a major ideal during the Scientific Revolution, Regiomontanus might not have been influenced to study the stars and discover zodiacs. Humanism influenced people to open not only books, but their minds, and discover many things, especially in science.
During St. Augustine’s time, his political and social views had a lasting effect on the way that the world viewed religion and society. Although, the Augustinian worldview eventually ran its course, and made way for a different way of thinking. Whilst Augustinian worldview was based on St. Augustine’s beliefs in Christianity, the worldviews that took over were more so based in science. The Augustinian worldview died out due in part to the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution in the mid 1500-1600’s. The Protestant Reformation began in the 1500’s and lasted on into the 1600’s.
As America saw an end to World war 1 and entered the 1920s, the country was faced with rapid changes in American society. These changes challenged the old traditional American values and introduced tension between modernists and traditionalist. Tension grew in churches and schools after new scientific discoveries were being made which supported the idea of evolution, rather than the bible. American society saw dramatic changes in it’s old, familiar culture as the Harlem Renaissance emerged and women gained more rights, which began taking affect on the customary American lifestyle. After World War 1, science became the main contributing factor to the controversy over religion during the 1920s.
