There are multiple factors that constitute a barrier to achievement for African-Americans. These factors are defined to be external factors and internal factors. External factors include racism, parents’ education attainment and social economic status. These factors can lead to the low rate of literacy. Another problem that causes the high rate of illiteracy among African-American is that it derived from past history and the way African–Americans have been brought up in the family setting since slavery. It eventually implies that this must also be a generational problem; therefore, it cannot be totally resolved unless their mindset has changed.
