There are many different barriers to diversity and inclusion. Some examples of the biggest barriers within diversity and inclusion are prejudice, culture, upbringing and religious beliefs. Prejudice is “an unfavourable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason” which can indicate such things as stereotyping or basing your opinion on another individual or groups view of a person or culture. Cultural barriers can be a lack consideration for someone’s spiritual beliefs, relationships or dietary needs. A cultural barrier is a wall between two people because of identity differences. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd had approached many themes throughout the novel, a large one being prejudice. Lily was raised in an area where racial prejudice was commonly practiced however, she tended to be very naive and not see it. Abby easily articulates how diversity and oppression are intertwined in all cultures and belief systems. Abby seems to have a natural ecological or systems perspective that has been developed through her own experiences which she easily transfers to highlight ongoing structural and cultural practices that are oppressive. I feel that Abby’s worries for her son were not about self-stigmatization but more about the freedom to be who you are despite culture beliefs and oppressive structures such as the gender stereotypes and segregation in the Hasidic community she grew up in.

In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee takes the reader through a journey of a innocent black man, named Tom Robinson, who is falsely convicted of rape. Lee looks at the life of Scout, a young girl whose father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending Tom. We see Scout grow up and learn about the prejudices in her society, including how she is under constant pressure to behave like a women and how people are categorized by their social status. Lee uses the heart wrenching, unfair trial of Tom: to convey racism, how social status affects the poor families in the town, and Scouts battle with sexism.
I think if this country has any unifying forces at all today, it would be diversity, though in some cases it could turn out to cause disunity rather than unity. I think diversity is a unifying force because it enables us learn and grow through the collaboration of working with people who may think different from you or may have different methods for doing things. Another unifying force I think is present in America today is innovation in the newest technology, or what was known as the Enlightenment in the mid-18th century. As new immigrants move in, they also bring their talents and creative abilities. Through cooperation with Americans here, more is discovered and developed.
Q: What is your personal statement on diversity? Diversity is being different from others. People have to acknowledge that not everyone is alike in the world. We are different and we have many ways to show that we are unique, ordinary, creative and open minded individuals. Everyone is unique in their own way because knowing the fact that you can show your true colors, is what brings peoples attention to wanting to get to know one another and know more about that unique individual.

I am deliberately situating my discussion on diversity and inclusion in the context of Nigeria.
An example of a diversity issue is when there is a not a diverse range of people of different ages. Some employers take on young people for the job because they are newly graduated and are more knowledgeable about tech and computers whereas older people are used to the old fashion way.
