The rivalry
Jack was on his way to the first baseball practice of the season. Everybody knew that Jack was the best baseball player in the small town of Bosville, but over the summer a new baseball player moved into town, named Joe. Joe was supposed to be better than Jack. Joe was only 15 and he already had college scouts looking at him and trying to get him to play for the team they were scouting for. For the first time in Jack’s baseball career he is going to have to play good to keep his position at shortstop. When Jack got to practice he went to go warm up. While he was warming he noticed Joe. Jack had not got a chance to talk to Joe during school because Joe had Just moved into town two days ago and Jack did not see Joe those two days

Just then the coach blew the whistle signaling practice was starting so Jack told Joe “He can show him around sometime” and they both left to go take the field. Jack had noticed Joe was doing really good at practice but Jack did good himself. Jack usually played shortstop but today Jack and Joe alternated at shortstop. Jack really wanted to play shortstop and lead his team to the world series but Joe wanted to the same thing. Jack finally had some competition at shortstop for first time in his life. At the end of practice
Jack asked Joe if “He wanted to go out and get some pizza with him and he could show him around downtown.”
But Joe said “He had to go home and help his mom move their stuff into their new house, but maybe we could go get pizza with him another time”. Tomorrow afternoon Jack and Joe had their next practice.They started their season really early and only had four practices until there first game and the coach of Jack and Joe’s team had not announced the starter’s. The Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays had a remarkable playoff game for Major League Baseball that all came down to the bizarre seventh inning. Mary told the narrator to come back, if he needed a place to rent. He later rents out a room in Mary’s house, since he cannot return to the Men’s House. One day, when the narrator was walking down the street while eating yam, he noticed an eviction of two old couples. The narrator felt sorry for the couples so he became angry, which made him give a speech. Brother Jack offers a job opportunity in the Brotherhood organization because of the inspirational speech he gave at the eviction of the old couples.

In this quote it is showing that they have gotten closer because Maureen called him a friend and she also teaches him how to write a haiku. At the end of the story they have gotten so close that they are practically best friends now. She helped him do well in literacy and they talk back and forth for a long time. When Joe gets a C- on his project and his parents ground him, Maureen talks to his parents and they unground him which makes Joe very happy. It shows how happy he is in the story when he tells her what happened.

The story of Calico Joe all began when he was called up from an AA team from Midland, Texas. The first pitch thrown to him he smashed over the wall, his first of many major league home runs. As his rookie season went on, he shattered many records such as: 15 consecutive hits, three home runs in three at bats, highest batting average ever for 38 games, and at least one hit 19 games in a row. As he continued to shock the world, he became hero of the narrator, Paul Tracey. At the time, Paul was a young boy and loved the game of baseball.
Suddenly, awful news spread about an England rugby player getting severely injured. Jonny Wilkinson, leading point scorer for England, tore his ACL in a game facing Fiji. The team suffered a devastating blow, but the management decided the winner of the tournament would be playing as the replacement of Jonny Wilkinson. Jack was melancholy, but he realized he needed to try to win to live up to his father’s name. He got up from his couch, but he fell right back onto it.
He is alone; he has no job opportunity in Washington because Roy has died. But Joe is happy. Joe has finally faced unlocked that “hidden thing” and he has embraced it. After a while of Becca and Jack hanging out they started to date. Becca and Jack talked about what sport that they were planning on playing because of the new policy. Becca was telling Jack how she was going to play C team for soccer and she convinced Jack to join with her.
