This drug, created from the bark of a willow tree had the ability to relieve pain-- a revolutionary product; it was the answer to people’s pain. When Aspirin was created in 1899, people were still old school in farming, house work and daily jobs since the industrial revolution had not occurred yet. However Bayer did not give up, even behind the scenes they continued to try to promote their company in an effort to make a comeback and be in business again. In the recent decades, Bayer has made a significant comeback and have tried diligently to move forward from their past by contributing to the world of medicine. To be able to encourage society to use generic drugs, the act was believed to allow generic drug companies to expedite the FDA approval process so that their products were able to go to the market as soon as brand name products for patents expired. Generic designers “may file an abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) that incorporates the safety/effectiveness data submitted by original pioneer drug manufacture and adds only bioequivalence studies”. It is hard to say if the Hatch-Waxman has improved “pharmaceutical innovation” however, the approval and marketing process for generic drugs has helped people significantly. There was an increase in ANDA applications during 1998 and there has been a “high success rate for patent invalidation”. “Since Hatch-Waxman, virtually all top-selling drugs not covered by patent face generic competition; whereas pre–Hatch-Waxman, only 35% had generics available.

One of the most shocking controversy concerns one of the biggest economic industry in the world. Pharmaceutical compagnies are apparently willing to do everything for money, even risking people’s life. They have been accused to invent illness and create the treatments to increase the demand of medications. One of the recent example is the H1N1. Likely, they created the vaccine way before the illness appears.
In 2012, 11 of the major drug companies in the United States each made a net profit of nearly 85 million dollars. Big pharmaceutical companies have gained too much power these past decades. These companies take it upon themselves to decide what drugs are going to be produced and what information is going to be presented or hidden from the American public. Publication bias and conflict of interests are two of the biggest problems in the pharmaceutical industry. Publication bias occurs when companies take the results from the clinical trials and hide the information that could potentially hurt their chances of getting the new drug passed.

This even started the chemical industry in America which has been dubbed “America’s second industrial revolution” by many (LINK). This not only damaged Germany’s war time industry but destroyed its post war industry as there was little to no need for German products after the war as most countries had found new suppliers or developed the industry themselves during the war. The business grew slowly at first until Coca Cola began purchasing saccharin in bulk quantities in 1903. Monsanto then began to increase their variety of food additives in production and entered into the pharmaceutical business as well, with the production of aspirin and the antiseptic, phenol. The increased demand for industrial chemicals by domestic companies whose European suppliers had to rebuild as a result of the conflict of World War I allowed Monsanto another opportunity for growth.
