Most, if not all people know about the implications of World War II; so it does not really come as a surprise that the war effect spread worldwide, compromising our food and clothes and even our medications. The Bayer Company is one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies in the United States, dating back even before the two World Wars. Some of their most popular drugs today are Aspirin, Prontosil, Ciprofloxacin and Yaz. However, it did not start this way. Bayer has faced numerous setbacks, the most devastating one being the invasion by the Nazis in World War II-- in which Bayer faced a problem that they did not believe they could ever overcome.

People died of Spanish influenza and numerous other illnesses that we have a cure for today. In the late 19th century, the new addition of the medication Aspirin was all the rage, which meant Bayer was all the rage. It was the first major medication and its popularity took off. This drug, created from the bark of a willow tree had the ability to relieve pain-- a revolutionary product; it was the answer to people’s pain. When Aspirin was created in 1899, people were still old school in farming, house work and daily jobs since the industrial revolution had not occurred yet. People did everything with their hands and that took a toll on their health. For a lot of people, Aspirin was exactly what they needed to continue living their lives and provide for their family. On the other hand, Bayer was extremely well-off, marketing one of the most popular drugs, even in this technologically-advanced society. After the lack of business in post WWII, Bayer retreated from the public eye for quite some time. However Bayer did not give up, even behind the scenes they continued to try to promote their company in an effort to make a comeback and be in business again. In the recent decades, Bayer has made a significant comeback and have tried diligently to move forward from their past by contributing to the world of medicine. Although they were not a favorite in the public's eye, people cannot turn away from the drug that Bayer created-- Ciprofloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic used widely in the 1990’s that has been called the 35th most commonly prescribed drug and fifth antibacterial in the United States in 2010.
