Being a hero means saving a kid stuck in a crack of ice. In the article by Mrs.Lauren, Kole Devissecher who was driving by the Red River noticed a blue jacket. So he backed up for another look. When he backed up, he saw a 10-year-old kid stuck in ice. He immediately got out of his car to rescue the kid. He used his truck’s tow strap. he threw it to the kid and commanded him to “catch it”.(Lauren 1). But the kids were already blue and couldn’t catch it. Then Kole made a loop and asked him to put is around his shoulders. He succeeded! Kole saved the kid. Even though Kole never knew the 10-year-old, he risked his life of falling on ice to save the kid. A hero should be willing to risk his life for others and that’s what Kole did.

The mother is advising her son to keep going even though he might find that the challenge at hand is more than he thinks he can handle. She does this because, like most individuals, she has the obligation to help her son if it will make him stronger. She knows that advising him now will give him a chance at a good life that she never had for herself.
On line 2 the Mother says, “My life ain't been no crystal stair,” when Langston uses that to compare the Mothers life he means her life hasn't been easy, and later in the poem on lines 3-6 he says, ”It's had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor-'' he uses those to tell the reader how the Mothers life was difficult.
