Martin Luther King, Jr. originally born as Michael King Jr, was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia to his father Michael “Martin” Luther King Sr., a Baptist minister, and his mother Alberta Williams-King. Martin Luther King Jr., also became a Baptist minister and later a social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950’s until his death by assassination on April 4th, 1968. Dr. King died far too young at the age of thirty-nine. King was the main activist behind the end of legal segregation as the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which practiced non-violence in everything they did, including the March on Washington in 1963. He is most known for his I Have a Dream speech, and because of history changing events like these King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Martin Jr. 's grandfather, A.D. Williams, was a rural minister for years and then moved to Atlanta in 1893. He took over the small, struggling Ebenezer Baptist church with around 13 members and made it into a forceful congregation. He married Jennie Celeste Parks and they had one child that survived, Alberta. Michael King Sr. came from a sharecropper family in a poor farming community. He married Alberta in 1926 after an eight-year courtship.
His father’s father is Zeruga and his mothers father was Jesse. There is no recollection of his great grandfather but many grandfathers down it truly comes down to Adam. His parents were Jessie Janet Woodrow and Joseph Ruggles Wilson, his dad was a Presbyterian(it is a religion) minister. He had 4 siblings, they moved to Staunton, Virginia, Augusta, Georgia so basically all over the south. In Tommy 's first year he was in Columbia were Reverend wilson taught at Columbia Theological Seminary. As a kid he saw the carnage of the civil war up close. After the war he saw the Confederate president Jefferson Davis in chains.
He was the second one born out of 12 brothers and sisters. That is a lot of kids! His family were also puritans. His dad had a thriving livestock business, but his mom died when he was young though. He graduated from Yale and went to college at 14.
