The first record of firefighting dates back to the 2nd century during Egyptian times. The fire service has made tremendous strides over the years, including when Ben Franklin founded the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1736, which was the first volunteer fire company. Since then there have been many great leaders who have led the fire service to be what it is today. One person who is most well-known for their impact on the fire service is Chief Alan Brunacini; also known by his friends and coworkers as “Bruno” (Foskett, 2020). Bruno joined the fire service in 1958 with the Phoenix Fire Department.

Unlike many of the fellow recruits who spent years preparing to become a firefighter, Unger an Ivy League grad simply responded to a bus stop ad. After realizing that most recruits were either former military, tradesmen or other firefighter’s kids Unger “Mostly I just stayed quite, tried to down play my existence. I figured if I could just make it through the academy without being called out as a fraud, I’d end up a firefighter like the rest of them”(Unger, 22-23). This distinction between Unger and the rest of the recruits was seen as something to be ashamed of, something to hide away.

In the article, Heroic Firefighter’s Story, published by ABC News, the author focuses on the story of a particular firefighter who risked and lost his own life in attempt to rescue victims stuck inside the World Trade Center during 9/11, Timothy Stockpole. The article first introduces us to Stockpole by presenting a background of him, describing a life-threatening incident he first had while stuck in a burning house 3 years before his actual death. Then, it continues to explain what happened to him as he attended his (unknowingly) last day of work, while going into detail about what happened soon after his death, such as the fact that 10,000 people showed up at his funeral. The tone of this article could be described as melancholic, because

We need firefighters just as much as we need the military to protect our country. They also need money to maintain their apparatus. The main way fire companies get their money is through donations and fundraisers. They often put a lot of work into it and they don't get much money out of it. Because of this I propose that we make a tax.
This job is seen as a high honor and the firemen themselves get

In this first assignment, I will try to demonstrate several areas where the trend of hiring greater educated firefighters did affected not only our training division but also the relationship between generations within our composite department. In the last ten years, our department took the approach that hiring educated firefighters from a recognize Fire School Academy would possibly be a better strategies for our small department. I for myself believe in education in the fire service, if not, why would I have registered in this program. In reality, this is where our department started to struggle.
