I had never been to the Utah symphony or Abravanel hall for that matter so after learning that listening reports were going to be a part of this class I was very excited to have the excuse to go. Coming from Seattle I wasn’t expecting too much out of the Utah symphony solely on the fact that Utah isn’t as major of a city as Seattle and therefor would have less impressive performers. I found myself very wrong once the concert started. I was blown away hearing that the symphony was attempting all of Beethoven’s symphonies and the rehearsal schedule that they had to go through to be ready and was even more blown away with the opening movement of the Star Spangled Banner which I discovered is a tradition for them to preform standing up at the opening …show more content…
4 a little. Knowing that Coriolan was written for a play based off of the life of Coriolanus the Roman leader I was expected a much more severe performance if that makes sense. The song was much calmer and beautiful than I expected. The C minor key that it was written in did give some of the expected theme of the story but I guess I will have to see the play by Heinrich Joseph to find out …show more content…
With one of the most famous and simplest beginnings in all of classical music the four note motif is arguably the line that Beethoven is most famous for. It was written in 1804 but not finished until 1808 and contains the major themes of the classical style but also introduces many themes that become essential in the romantic period. In those four years between he was very busy writing his fourth and sixth symphonies, Piano Concerto No. 4, three other major piano sonatas and his violin concerto in D. There is a quote by Beethoven from his notes that says “begins in my head the working out in breadth height and depth. Since I am aware of what I want the fundamental idea never leaves me it mounts it grows I see before my mind the single picture in its whole extent as if in a single grasp” which plays into the idea of many scholars that Beethoven wrote the full four movement, 35 minute symphony based off of those four momentous notes. Those four notes have influenced symphonies in ways that even those who have dedicated their lives to studying music can’t
The overall pitch of this piece is low but the piano during 2:18-3:17 gives variety by introducing a higher pitch.
This song is celebratory and full of rejoice. Crescendos are often used. This song is song in harmony. The Brass and orchestra instruments really add to the piece. This song is also religious.
Once we came in and took a seat, the concert began promptly after. The concert was held in Brendle Recital Hall, and the audience sat in rows while the artists performed on the stage. Most of the audience was very respectful and chose to stay off their phones the whole concert, making it very easy to enjoy the music. Once each band began playing, it immediately captured my attention to where I didn’t
Beethoven has made such an impact on the classical music world form the 1800s until now and it is portrayed through many aspects. It takes hard work and dedication for orchestras to perfect the sound that is intended and that is what also makes the piece
There are many differences and similarities between the fourth movement of Beethven’s Fifth symphony and the fourth movement of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, whether it is the orchestrastion of the pieces, the dynamics, form and period. Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most well known Classical composers in music history, born into a family of musicians and was seen by his father as a profitable prodigy and had several of his piano compositions published by the age of twelve. He was the first successful freelance composer and changed the way music was composed and performed as he composed pieces that defied the standard ways of composing during the Classical era by using an expanded form structure, larger orchestra, dramatic themes and replaced minuet and trio with scherzo and trio making the third movements of his symphonies faster than traditionally performed. He also treated instruments as individuals instead of grouping them together such as the bass instruments which originally formed the Basso continuo. Beethoven experimented with the ways an instrument could be played , creating new sounds, and would have large pitch ranges between instruments which aided in the expressiveness and drama of his pieces.

I like Beethoven for many reasons.
The sorrow of the princess was definitely felt by the audience and it was heard throughout the piece. Since the piece was intended to be sad, it remained in a minor key for the most part. I did notice that as the intensity of the song (when the princess’ father send soldiers to capture the two lovers) was shown by using louder dynamics such as fortissimo (ff) rather than piano (p) or pianissimo (pp). Lopez also included more use of the percussion and brass instruments such as the tuba, trombone, trumpet and horn making the suspense grow. The upper stringed instruments complimented the flute very nicely since they both have that soothing sound.
Their works changed through their careers and they used many different techniques to keep their compositions up to their standards and interests. Beethoven and Brahms influenced many composers years after their deaths and their works continue to be studied to this day. Ludwig van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the classical period. He wrote 9 symphonies, 1 opera, 32 piano sonatas, 5 piano concertos and many other works.
In Mendelssohn 's "Symphony No. 4", the first movement is longer than an average movement of a classical piece. He tends to repeat the same melodies and rhythms and tunes half way through the bar. Thus creating complex chords and longer melodies. In Brahms '"Symphony No. 2 Movement 4", "the
Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony in the course of his deafness. The Ninth Symphony remains well-known and popular to many, despite its diversity in comparison to his previous pieces. The Ninth Symphony often receives varied reactions by listeners, but it has been referred to as an inspiration to the methodology of musical analysis. The Ninth Symphony may have received mixed reviews, but there is no doubt
There is no relevant soundtrack to be commented on since it only appears to fill in the gaps when there is no dialogue; this means that the director decided to make the original words from Shakespeare the absolute protagonist of the film. In my opinion, carrying the plot of Coriolanus to the twenty-first century was a superb idea because this film reaches out to the people of today in ways that Shakespeare could never have foreseen and it works just fine because while the language remains being Shakespeare’s blank verse, the political hypocrisies and the grinding of war’s engine transcend any
The third movement, was similar to the first, but more very conversational. The fourth movement was loud, fast, and serious all in one. No one was smiling, it was like the end of the battle. At the end of the performance Mrs.Orth acknowledge each section and made them stand up and take bow, next she made the whole orchestra stand up several times, and take several bows. While the audience gave them a standing
Prior to this, I have never attended a classical concert. I actually had no clue as to what to expect because I could not find a review for UH concerts. The Jazz Orchestra performed in the Moores Opera House on a stage setting similar to that of my middle school band. The band instruments were tiered on the risers while the other performers were simply beside the risers. There were a few noticeable differences such as, the microphones set in the center for soloists, and a marker hanging from above to mark the center of the stage.
