The desire of change Most individuals tend to have something they desire or need that they work towards throughout their lives. Reaching these desires can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment. However sometimes there are obstacles blocking people from reaching their desires, some overcome these obstacles while others don't. The short story Behind the Headlines by the author Vidyut Aklujkar follows the protagonist, Lakshmi who is feeling unfulfilled in her marriage and her husband, Hariharan who is a man that thrives on structure, stability and routine. Lakshmi reflects upon her monotonous and unfulfilling life, she desires for some sort of change in her life to make her feel more fulfilled and happy. However, Hariharan serves as a significant …show more content…
What did I achieve in these twelve years? "(Aklujkar 1-2) In this quote she relates her marriage to a term of penance, or a tapas which refers to the act of self-punishment or self-discipline that one performs in order to show remorse for a wrongdoing or to seek forgiveness for a sin. Lakshmi is reflecting on her marriage and realizing that she has achieved nothing she is proud of in the past 12 years of her life, almost like she has been living her life soly for him and not for herself. By comparing her marriage to a term of penance the text suggests that Lakshmi viewed her marriage as a period of hardship and suffering rather than a source of happiness, fulfillment and growth. The message conveyed through Lakshmi's reflection on her marriage and desire for change is important as it emphasizes the significance of personal fulfillment and purpose within a relationship. This serves as a reminder that people should strive for personal growth and happiness within their relationship rather than sacrificing and living their life for their partner. It shows the potential consequences of being in such a relationship, which is that it leads to one questioning their life choices and having nothing that they are proud of achieving in their …show more content…
Lakshmi reveals that she is unhappy with this Behavior as it shows a lack of trust and faith in her competence and her intelligence despite the fact that she has never made a mistake. Hariharan however dismisses her and does not believe that his reminders are unnecessary or show a lack of trust. He doesn't show any sympathy for her feelings thus making Lakshmi feel self conscious.Trust is an essential part of a healthy relationship as it builds a sense of security, mutual respect and also strengthens the bond between the couple. One partner repeatedly questioning the other's capabilities can lead them to feel self-conscious and not respected. This behavior can strain the bond and connection between the two resulting in either the end of a relationship or an unfulfilling and dissatisfying relationship, like
In “Sold,” internal and external expectations shaped Lakshmi’s life by helping her realize that many situations aren’t as they seem and helping her learn how to react to those situations.
Further on, when Lakshmi reaches the train station there is an occurrence of public shaming in which a woman tries to run away from her home and the pimp explains to Lakshmi what happens, “‘One look at that head of hers and anyone can tell she’s a disgraced woman.’ He says. ‘Even if she does run off again, no one will help her’” (McCormick 86). This shows how the pimp is again instilling fear into Lakshmi, making sure she does not try to leave his side if she becomes suspicious as she would be shamed and thought of as a disgrace by society if she disobeys her ‘husband’.
In page 102 when she had sex with that old man and she bite his lip. On page 120 when this guy named Habib tired to be a pervert in Lakshmi’s room. Life is priceless and another
Even though in this story we don’t learn about what Lakshmi went through after she was rescued we can assume that it was not all good things. Some women experience Stockholm Syndrome after leaving because they have been doing it for so long and don’t know what kind of reaction they will get from their families and
Such as, a corrupt marriage, unequal treatment, the exceptional need to locate true happiness, along with the strength and determination it required to make the decision that would forge the path of their future. This issue is portrayed in the text when Lakshmi voices, "'What is it, Ama?' I say. Ama wipes her cheek with the hem of her shawl. ' Your stepfather has said you must go to the city and earn your keep as a maid'" (51). Ama didn't want Lakshmi to go away; hence her crying, but she didn't have a choice.
. . My stepfather scowls, but he does not say anything. On any other day, he would not tolerate such defiance, especially from a mere girl” (McCormick 54-55). After he sold Lakshmi, he is tolerates her defiance and accepts it. He’s not the only other one in the novel that people can feel compassionate towards.
She knew her family was waiting patiently for her to finish her work in the city and come back home. Lakshmi thought she was doing the right thing by going to the city to help her family’s financial situation, but she did not know that she was going to have to “give herself up” in the way she was forced to. It was Lakshmi’s idea to go work in the city to help her family, so it was a big surprise to her when she found out she wasn’t actually going there to be a maid. The thought of her family at home was the one thing that motivated her to get her work over with so she could come back home: “Each night, I dream that Ama and I are sitting outside our hut...and she is twining my hair into long dark braids” (109). Lakshmi was describing how she dreams about her and her mother sitting back at home together.
Upon hearing this consequence of what could happen if she tried to leave Lakshmi
Lakshmi shows her hope to help her family; even if that means moving away and going to the city to work and send back the money. For a naive girl who did not know anything about anything beyond her life on the mountain, this was easy, until she realized that life outside of her shack on the side of the mountain is much different from life in the city. For Lakshmi hope was the only thing she had while in the Happiness House. She shows this as she has only one goal, one hope. Which is to get back to her family when she states, “All I know is that each time one leaves, my debt to Mumtaz grows a little smaller.”
The story featured Lakshmi starting a career and helping in a crisis center. Hariharan's indifference for his wife's employment and personal life is best exemplified by the following: “Hariharan did not even know that. He never asked her what she did all day long. In the early days of their married life, she used to offer that information to him but as she sensed his utter lack of interest in the activities that seemed significant to her, she had developed a habit of not communicating anything about herself.” (4) Caring and being concerned about each other is key to achieve a life without stress, increases in happiness and being happy.
Some of the girls think about the tea they will be able to buy, others think about how much they still have to pay back to Mumtaz. Lakshmi thinks about what she misses the most her family, her home is where she wants to be. You can see that from this quote from the novel. “I inhale deeply drinking in the scents of mountain sunshine, warmth that smells of freshly turned soil and clean laundry, baking in the sun, I breathe in a cool Himalayan breeze and the woodsy tang of a cooking fire then I can get by until the next twilight” (126). All this is reminding her of back home, it’s like she is in the happiness house, but her mind is still back home and as long as she has that she can make it to the next night.
Success is regulated by humility to admit personal faults and recognize the faults of one’s potential spouse. True love is not measured by always accepting positive attention, but by accumulating marital partnership between a wife and husband. In other words, marriage is a symbiotic relationship in regard to continuous giving. Prayer must be consistent to achieve spiritual happiness, for without a Biblical foundation the marriage will depreciate. Lastly, Thomas (2013) elucidates the ideology that marriage is not exclusively based around discovering a suitable partner; it is also about improving
Lakshmi’s view on her father is, “Most likely he has spent the night gambling-and- loosing at the tea shop”(McCormick 24). In Sold, Ama’s relationship with her husband was not healthy or safe for her family or her own well being. Lakshmi’s stepfather used her mom, Ama, for his own pleasure and does not consider valuing her for being the strong women she was. His relationships with others add to the reason why Lakshmi was sold into prostitution. Because of this, he left the family’s money in shambles and needed a way out.
However, these transformations have also brought freedoms and tensions as there are also high divorce rates underneath high marriage rates. The contradiction of interests among love, family and freedom has affected the perspective of relationships nowadays and hence people need to recognise their priority of personal
