Think about the title before reading, and make a prediction I think that the poem will be about Ha and her family seeing something of those colors and relating to it somehow. Translate the poem into your own words. The bell dings. Everyone rises. I stand. The stand in a line. I do too Down a walkway. Turn to the left. Recieve a tray. Take food. Sit. On one half of the light, loud room, light skin. On the other side, dark skin. Both sides happy, eating, as if they never assumed someone medium would appear. I have no idea where to sit, same as my knowledge of eating a pink sausage tucked in bread shaped as a corncob, covered with sauces of yellow and red colors. I figure that they are mocking the Vietnamese flag until I remember that most people
The overall theme of the poem is sacrifice, more specifically, for the people that you love. Throughout the poem color and personification are used to paint a picture in the reader's head. “Fog hanging like old Coats between the trees.” (46) This description is used to create a monochromatic, gloomy, and dismal environment where the poem takes
She continues to provide vivid imagery using many colors which reflects the speaker's interest towards the visual appeal of the quilt relating it to her. She also expresses imagery through her dreams by saying, “of my father's burnt umber pride” and “my mother's ochre gentleness. ”(Lines 37,40) The colors play an important role because the color symbolizes her family, and those close to the speaker, “yellow brown of Mama’s cheeks...her yellow sisters...grandfather’s white family... my father’s burnt umber pride”(line 17,25,26,39).
Overall, what I took away from the poem is that we as a country need to come together and try to change the system so everyone is able to feel safe in our country. It’s so important for other people to begin to see and understand the constant struggles that minorities go through because since it doesn’t relate to the majority of people they won’t ever even give it a second thought. However, by having poems like The Joy of Motherhood FreeQuency is able to touch a large base of people with her personal experience being black in America, and I believe many other African-Americans can
Throughout the poem she uses imagery as well. She said in stanza four, “And a husband who has wiped off his eyes in order not to see my inside out.” This
Another classmate commented that she liked how the first line seemed to have a completely different meaning when rereading the poem, since it illustrates how killing one’s own inner demons is a cycle. One student also felt disconnected at “with each glance your shadow grows darker”, since the poem is not clear about what this character is glancing at or where this dialogue is coming
“Sweet Home Alabama” by Ronnie VanZant contains a message that has been at the tip of our noses, but some did not care to actually evaluate it. The catchy song speaks directly to Neil Young, telling him to mind his own business because he [Young] -- a Yankee -- has not lived what the Southerners have. I believe VanZant knew what a problem segregation and the Civil Rights movement were in Alabama, yet he loves the South. In the first stanza, he writes, “I miss ‘ole’ ‘bamy once again…” referring to the State of Alabama. VanZant certainly doesn’t need Young’s opinion, or him in general, as we see in the line, “Well I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don’t need him around anyhow...”
“Nooo, please do not take ha’, Hope is all I have left.” Mama screamed as the soldiers ripped me out of her arms. I clinged on to her with dear life, still not enough. That was two years ago, I have not seen her since. I remember this as if it just happened yesterday.
The other question I have after read this poem is that what the purpose of the front part of the poem is. Just for background or illustration? After a few minutes, I could consider their purpose and then called the high school literature classes to mind. There is a reason for everything and everything in the literature is necessary to design. For example, the buzz saw establishes itself as a presence in the very first line, snarling and rattling away.
This is also present in the fact that she is detached from her family members. A black feather with white band is said to signify home, harmony and balance. All that she wishes to be surrounded by but isn’t. It’s not that she can’t have balance at all it’s that she never has enough time to bring it in to light. The feather is covering one of her eyes to convey that she is blinded by this dream of one day settling down in one place and bringing the whole family together.
The end of the poem you see her in a casket with a new nose and makeup and essentially she looks like a doll. Everyone who is there to see her comments on how pretty she. She is said to now have a happy ending. This poem talks about how this girl was just an innocent girl who didn't have any issues with herself till she reached a certain age.
“Clearly animals know more than we think, and think a great deal more than we know. ”- Irene M. Pepperberg. This quote shows that animals are smarter than we think and know more than we think they know. In the two poems “A Blessing” and “Predators”, there are many ways that they are similar and different.
In the poem, he speaks about racism in the law, as well as how you are treated in society depends on your skin color. The poem is not good to read only because of its subject, however. The use of repetition and symbolism in “Blink Your Eyes” adds more depth to the poem, and highlights the societal issues that the author and others of his race have felt. Use of repetition in poetry directs the reader 's attention to that word or phrase, as Sundiata does in “Blink Your Eyes.” Along with how the stanzas are formed, the repetition used sets a pace to the poem.
The poem really expresses how one mother values her son, and tells you how kids grow up to fast and she believes that her little boy cannot handle the challenges life throws at you. At the end of poem, the mom is surprised that her son learns to get out of the chains and get past the challenges he has been through. Families will always have a strong bond and it can never be broken, no matter what life throws at your family, you will always get though it and find new ways to make your relationship even stronger. Later in life as the kids get older, they learn that their mom will not always be there for you, so they start to get close with their mom and they realize all the wonderful things your mom did for you.
This was to help the young girl voice her opinion about the segregation issues that was in America at this time. There was strong imagery involved in the poem too. When the mother says the dogs are fierce and wild, it gives a sense of what the dogs look like and their behavior. Also, when the girl is getting dressed, an image of her white gloves and shoe along with her “night-dark hair” is shown as imagery (line 17). Not only is there imagery in this stanza of the poem, but a few metaphors.
This imagery represents how the cynical voices were blocking all that was good within her life, the stars representing the good. As she pushed through the clouding voices, the chance for a brighter future had become clearer. Oliver uses the voices as a rhetorical strategy in order to show how she felt within that certain situation. The different uses of voice from Mary Oliver not only string the entire poem together. It also intensifies the meaning of the text, allowing a deeper connection between reader and
