Bedside handoff is one of the ways we are involving the patient more. Maxson, P. M., Derby, K. M., Wrobleski, D. M., & Foss, D. M. (2012) (P.141) “stated the Joint Commission said in their National Patient Safety Goals for 2009 and 2010 that they wanted patients to be more involved with their care as well as Nursing to have a standard hand off process when there is a change of care”. Bedside handoff covers both initiatives laid out by Joint Commission. Bedside handoff will allow the patient to meet the oncoming nurse and the patient will be involved with his/her care (Maxon et al., 2012). Patients have also felt more at ease with this process with being able to hear what the plan was for their care and are able ask questions about their care
Each veteran will be administered a new VA identification card that has “bar-lines” for scanning purposes. When a veteran’s medication is administered, the nurse scans the veteran’s card, in addition to scanning the medication that is to be administered. The veterans are asked their full name and last four of their social security number, however with the scanning of their cards, it provides the additional security when confirming their allergies, age, weight, and gender. The study will use a monitoring system that is used by the VA’s called Surveillance of adverse drug events (ADEs). This system is used for reporting observed and new ADEs at the VA (VA, 2014).

We have talked this semester about informed consent and how important it is that our patients understand the meaning of what they are having done. We need to be able to understand what the nature of the procedure is and what it details. It’s also good to discuss other types of alternatives. Informed consents can also bring up certain topics about the risk that can be involved with the procedure. As healthcare professionals it is part of our job to help look after the patient and make sure that all legal documents are in order.
Consequently, the new HIPAA regulations also include significantly increased requirements for business associates and the subcontractors of those business associates. A subcontractor is any entity that does not have a direct contractual relationship with a covered entity, but still receives, maintains, transmits or creates protected health information as part of their work for a business associate of a covered entity. Under the new regulations, subcontractors are included in the definition of "business associate" and also subject to the same criminal and civil sanctions applicable to covered entities and business associates for violations of HIPAA. The new HIPAA regulations also require each covered entity to take action to cure a breach or end a HIPAA violation by its business associate if the covered entity knows of a pattern or practice of its business associate that violates HIPAA. Covered entities will need to take a more active role in monitoring the activities of their business associates to cure breaches and end HIPAA

Julian is able to recognize which patients, and which of the three divisions: gastroenterology, cardiology, and oncology is using more of a variety of resources, since some patients do require more medication, lab work, and therapeutic treatment, based on the patient’s diagnoses. The information from the third system will provide Dr. Julian the ability to recognize and distinguish that not all patients require the same amount of care, some patients due to their diagnosis require different level of nursing care, some more than others. With this third approach Dr. Julian will be able to have a more precise cost of care service given to the different patients based on their necessities. The information provided by both second and third system will provide Dr. Julian with a more efficient way to control costs. She will now able to see the differences in costs among the divisions using the second and third approach.
