Agoraphobia has, for a long time, been a condition that's been widely misunderstood. The literal definition of this disorder is a fear of open spaces, however this view can be very misleading. Individuals who suffer from agoraphobia panic disorder are afraid of the feelings of anxiety and panic that happen when in certain places. For some, the feelings of panic can happen at home, whilst out shopping or even in church. This disorder comes about when an individual begins to avoid the places and situations that cause the feelings of intense panic and anxiety. Some of the more common phobic situations include standing in line, driving, meetings and social gatherings.
A phobia is more than just a typical fear, it's an intense and excessive fear of a certain object or place. Some of the more common agoraphobia symptoms include a fear of being alone, the inability to leave the house for long periods of time, a sense of helplessness and an overdependence on others. The feeling of being afraid is a type of feeling in which we have all felt at one point in our lives. The person’s reaction to this feeling is different for each person. Some of the reactions would be the stress and the feeling of being vulnerable because the person would want to know on how to protect your loved ones and of course on how to protect yourself. This fear can rise through not only imminent threats but also through perceived threats. Some of the threats that a person can experience can be a terroristic attack, for example September 11 and another threat could be a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina.
Having a panic disorder means you “ experience spontaneous seemingly out-of-the-blue panic attacks and are preoccupied with the fear of a recurring attack. Panic attacks occur unexpectedly, sometimes even during sleep” (adaa.org). It’s all about the sensations of the body and excessive worrying. A panic disorder can lead to agoraphobia and depression. I had developed depression as well because of my anxiety.
Imagine having to go into battle and watch out for fellow soldiers barring a sneak attack. When the solider returns home there is a phobia or anxiety about crowded places. Crowded places can cause extreme anxiety because of the feeling of no control. They cannot ensure what is around the corner, or if danger is luring ahead. The anxiety of being in the warzone watching fellow soldiers lose their lives in battle because of a attack, in which they could not see the danger ahead.
