Mahatma Gandhi once said “the best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others,” which isn’t always true because he didn’t disclose the negatives of community service. Students should not be required to do community service because mandated community service can make students who do it for their own free will seem less special during college admission processes, it can pull students away from their education and work, and the pressure from this requirement could make students not consider future service involvement.
Students should not be required to do mandatory community service because the pressure the requirement puts on students can disinterest them from future community service. A cognitive study done by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan resulted in students’ “natural human response to lose enthusiasm” for the action being enforced (Pearce 3). Obligatory service can sometimes be thought of as an external force which can alter a student’s future outlook on volunteering. According to a study done by “The Economics of Education Review,” “required volunteering among older students led to a potential loss in long term volunteering” than elementary students (Sparks 9). The roots of community service come from the fact that it is voluntary making mandatory volunteering an oxymoron because they contradict. Only a few benefits would come out of required community service if it doesn’t help or encourage students’ service in the future. In addition to
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
Why did you not listen to the advice of your advisers to do your community service? Why do you act in such a lazy manor? They prevent the upperclassmen without max-ed cards from leaving campus by monitoring the elusive parking lot and threatening them with further damnation in the form of a detention. Each day they are revolted by those upperclassmen who refused their responsibilities and must remain within the confines of the Lincoln-Sudbury Cafeteria. ---O, my mentees and future upperclassmen, may it never be that a single soul here is found among the disturbing few condemned to spend their lunch break within these walls.
The definition of the word volunteer is to freely offer to do something. Looking at that definition, they word “freely” is key in explaining what volunteering really is. Someone who volunteers should do it out of the kindness of their heart and truly believe in what they are volunteering for without expecting or receiving any recognition of payment for their volunteer work. Although I believe any volunteer work is great not only for our community, but also for the individual, I am conflicted on the Silver Cord program. The Silver Cord program at Waukee High School provides great opportunities for high schoolers to give back to the community and get involved in other volunteering positions, however, do these high schoolers really volunteer their time for the betterment of their community?
One of the many actions that keep our nation going, that is often overlooked, is community service. Often times community service is required in school and in jobs encouraging people to be excited to help out. Other times, people
Gist Statement: “Serve or Fail”, a text written by Dave Eggers, published in the New York Times in 2004, argues that colleges should consider establishing a volunteer service requirement for students to graduate. Para. 1&2. Says: Dave Eggers reports that college students are done with finals, and are more than ready to break from school.
“There are many costs to modern society…but the most dangerous loss may be the community,” wrote Sebastian Junger in his book Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging. The genius of Junger reveals that even with all of its benefits, modern society will crumble from lack of a community experience. “The beauty and the tragedy of the modern world is that it eliminates many situations that require people to demonstrate a commitment to the collective good,” he writes.
70% of wealthy parents make their kids volunteer 10 hours or more a month, while only 3% of low income parents do the same (Dindar). While volunteering is generally a positive action that leads to positive outcomes to those in need, it can be problematic. Parents who use concerted cultivation encourage community service to gain resume boosters, networks, and a sense of pride in helping those who are “less fortunate.” Often the only time the upper class and middle class communities interact with low-income communities is through volunteer work. Though their very limited interactions, they form stereotypes, prejudices, and mental hierarchies of each other.
As Roman Catholics, it is our religious duty to serve others whether those people are a part of our religious community or whether they are from any other type of community. Service is an important aspect of life for not only Catholics but also every single person in the world. By performing various acts of service in our communities, a person’s life can be greatly improved just through a simple act of kindness and love from the person’s heart. Not only can an act of service be beneficial to the person or organization that the volunteer is performing the service for, but it can also be beneficial to the person who is partaking in this act of service for another human being. No matter your age, your background, or your religious affiliation, service is a crucial part of our everyday lives and everyone should get involved in this and do a service out of the good of their hearts.
Assignment #2 - What does service mean to me? This is a concept that I have been considering in great detail. I have always loved doing community service and giving back to the community. However, I never thought of what my life would be like without community service. The definition of service based on the Oxford dictionary: "The action of helping or doing work for someone.
Incarceration refers to the constitutional deprivation of an offender the capacity to commit crimes by detaining them in prisons. The United States has the highest incarceration rate of any free nation. The U.S incarcerates five times more people than the United Kingdom, nine times more than Germany and twelve times more than Japan (Collier, 2014, p.56). Incarceration has several objectives. One of these is to keep persons suspected of committing a crime under secure control before a court of competent jurisdiction determines whether they are guilty or innocent.
Volunteering is not an exclusively novel activity throughout the human history. During world war one, just in British there were 90,000 volunteers worked at home and abroad providing vital aid of caring for sick and wounded soldiers as recorded by British Red Cross. During wartime, no matter in which society there were people that spontaneously engaged in helping others in need. Volunteering does not only exist during the time of emergency or crisis, in fact it is always an indispensable resource for providing social service and improving our community.
Volunteering should be done intrinsically. Many students find community service so difficult, time consuming, and not enjoyable. Therefore, they tend to only complete the required hours without any essential effort. To call mandatory community service 'volunteering ' is a problem because then we begin to confuse the distinction between an activity that is willingly done and something that is obligatory and perhaps not always rewarding. Volunteering should be something you choose to do because you want to do it, not because somebody made you do it.
The feeling one gets after doing something good for others around us is not explainable, but it sure helps us feel more human and develop a better view of the things around us, what if children and youth where exposed to the same feeling, in my opinion children and youth will start participating more and more in community service projects to feel that they did something for the community. Charity work should not be mandatory and people should not have community service requirements to graduate, get a job or have a scholarship. The feeling of doing good is simply washed away when charity works becomes mandatory, youth who want to volunteer will do more but those who are not really interested will have a negative idea for volunteering and community service. The problem is that many schools, institutes and universities around the world use the mandatory community service for graduation. For example the university I study in has mandatory 80 hours of community service to get your final
Community Policing is the system of allocating police officers to areas so that they become familiar with local inhabitants. It is used to change the way police departments interact with the public, focusing on community concerns, including crimes. The idea of community policing is to work together to improve the life and quality in their neighborhoods. Community Policing emerged in the 1970’s with the goal to eliminate public disenchantment with police services and the criticisms of the lack of police professionalism (Fagin pg. 114). They identify and resolve issues which potentially affect the way neighborhoods live.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
