Benjamin Franklin’s quote meant that if you can give up on your own freedom or rights to keep yourself safe you shouldn’t be able to have rights or safety. In a CNN article about the sandy hook shooting; Before the shooting happened they said the gunman had a “ a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle made by Bushmaster and pistols made by Glock and Sig Sauer”. During Benjamin Franklin's time having the right to bear arms is in the constitution; and not carrying your gun would be going against your own rights; which Benjamin Franklin basically said should make you lose your rights and safety.
