“He awoke in the basement of Gacy’s home his body naked and pressed into a pillory like rack which held his arms and head. John Wayne Gacy a powerful, heavyset man was also naked, his fat, hairy belly sticking out obscenely. Gacy showed his victims various whips and instruments of torture along with number of strange looking sexual devices explaining lasciviously how he intended to use these implements on him. The assaults and torture went on for hours” (Nash 1247). A candidate that measures up to this disturbance would be the monster from Beowulf, Grendel. Grendel tortured and killed his victims brutally too showing no mercy like John Wayne. Grendel and John Wayne both shared a twisted comparison in the satisfaction of killing innocent men
Throughout the years, Beowulf has been compared to many modern day super heroes. However, the super hero that Beowulf is most easily compared to is Superman. Although there are multiple differences amongst these two characters, there are a few similarities as well. Such similarities exist in appearances, as well as supernatural qualities. Moreover, Beowulf and Superman are both portrayed as heroes for their time. Both Beowulf and Superman travel far and wide to defeat villains, save people, and encourage others. Their appearances are similar as well. Superman and Beowulf are dry, muscular, and strong. In fact, most people during their time would have considered them handsome.
Heroes. They are here for us when we need them. Without fail, they come to our rescue and save us from our sinful desires and offer an escape from the sin filled world we live in. At least that is the hero we think of when it comes to modern-day thoughts on a hero. One thing is true about a hero, that they have distinct qualities that set them above normal people. Heroes can also be wavered and effected by the characteristics of the society they were created in. However, heroes are not real but are created, usually to give hope to people or to provide a boost of morale to people who are being oppressed in away. If the average American, who would be accustomed to Marvel heroes, were to look at the Anglo-Saxon hero, they may not even consider them a true hero by today’s standards. The Anglo-Saxon heroic code consisted of being able to
Based on the article “The Thematic Paradigm” by Robert B. Ray, there are two kinds of heroes that are America’s favorite. The official hero and the outlaw hero and, both heroes have mirrored the American significance in many ways. The official hero is the one who behaves within the law. The official hero includes the law in their tasks and, helps create new laws for the future. The outlaw hero is the type of hero who takes matter into their own hands. The fictional superheroes Superman and Batman are two classical examples that are in accordance to Ray 's meaning of an official hero and an outlaw hero. The Thematic Paradigm makes it simple to understand the characteristics Americans look for in their heroes, Superman as the official and Batman
Hero’s are everywhere in this world sometimes they're around you other times they are far away, but everyone has a different hero. When we see a hero most people look up to that person because they know that they have done something good for someone. A hero’s place in society can be all over the world due to their different senses, but most of them will know when something bad is going to happen or when they know that you will need their help to fight mankind. A hero is someone that you look up too because you know that they do the right thing.
I agree with Michael Uslan where he argues that superhero characters are a modern mythology. Although science can help explain the background of the superheroes powers, superheroes are usually regarded as a Saviour rather than a science experiment. Since superheroes are much more unrealistic, it tends towards being a mythology instead.
Throughout time, the meaning of the word “hero” has changed throughout the world. Everyone has their own perspective of what qualities and characteristics “heroes” should have. In today’s modern world, we hear the word “hero” used constantly in tabloids, on the news, or in plain conversation. What exactly is a hero? Who, or what, can be classified as heroic? Many people would give an example of a super hero. Super heroes are different; a “super hero” is a “benevolent fictional character with superhuman powers, such as Superman”. I always preferred Batman and Iron Man over the rest of the superheroes due to the fact that they are regular people. They don’t need any special powers to fit into the same category as the super heroes that do. A hero by definition is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” That is a great definition for books and intellectual minds, but to the average person, a hero is much more.
John Gardner author of Grendel and an Unknown author of Beowulf wrote these to compare one another into one mega story. Grendel is about a "monster" who has been at war with humans for over 12 years. Over time he became fascinated by the way that humans live. At the end, Beowulf fights Grendel, and Beowulf pulled his arm off, and then runs away. Beowulf is about how the Danes built a great mead hall to gather and Grendel came and ruined it, killing a lot of the Danes in the process. Beowulf accepts Hrothgar's favor to fight Grendel, and Beowulf goes off and boasts about his accomplishments. He fights Grendel and wins! Towards the end, Beowulf dies due to a dragon bite. Grendel does not deserve sympathy because he invaded the Mead Hall, killed humans, and was irredeemable.
The story starts off with grendel fighting with a ram over annoyance and pessimistic views. Then the story goes back to Grendel’s childhood and his ages of intelligence and development. Grendel discover the earth and the humans in his childhood and faces off with some mental issues on people’s view on him. Eventually the story return to the present and Grendel talks about his time when he finds the mead hall and his experiences with it. Then the story transitions to the time he meets the dragon and asks him few questions on
Beowulf is a story that has been around since the year 580, or since 1000 AD. With that being said, there are bound to be several adaptations and modern re-imaginings of the same story about this dynamic warrior and all his glorious battles. The epic Beowulf (Heaney,Seamus) and one of its modern adaptation Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarson, S) has a few similarities, but they also have a great deal of differences, ranging from views on religion, Women, and even changing some of the story’s main characters. The movie’s addition of the main characters such as Grendel’s son, the witch, and Grendel’s dad, show that we, as the modern people, have a vastly different worldview with regards to the hardships of life’s complexities.
Beowulf is known as a Great Hero. Beowulf travels to go help the some innocent People down in Herot. Beowulf is known as the strongest and bravest but also for his heroic deeds for the people. Beowulf went out his way and put his life in danger for the good of the people. Beowulf Is Also Known For His glory and fame.
Years has passed when Hygelac is killed in battle. His son, Heardred, inherits the throne with Beowulf 's support. Beowulf became the king of the Geats village and he rules over everyone for 50 years. The had arose and started to stalk the village at night and eat people and destroying homes. He also destroyed Beowulf’s great hall. Once Beowulf finds out that the dragon 's night strikes he thinks and worries if destroying. Because that would bring trouble to his people in the village. In the poem Hamlet the poet talks about how a ghost stalks the homes Elsinore Castle in Denmark on a dark winter night.
Many times in modern day society has Beowulf, one of the oldest legends in history, been compared to super heroes. After reading Beowulf, and looking at dozens of online “discussions” (more so arguments), one will find that Beowulf is almost the exact same as Batman. Both Beowulf and Batman have an unearthly amount of strength, both use tools to their advantage when they need to, and both are called upon to deal with problems that others are either to weak or too cowardly to deal with themselves.
Many people believe that Batman is the world’s greatest made up hero and detective, he only does things that will help the world. People loved the comics of Batman so much, they turned it into many serious of movies. Batman is a modern day hero, however back in the 7th century the poem Beowulf was the world’s greatest made up hero. Beowulf was originally an epic poem, then turned into a novel Beowulf a New Telling by Robert Nye. Beowulf was the first English Literature to be written, written around the 7th century. The original Beowulf is extremely hard to read so, long ago someone that new Old English decided to translate it so people could read it easily. The most popular translation is Beowulf a New Telling by Robert Nye. Beowulf is a story
Beowulf and Grendel can be compared and contrast in many ways. Beowulf is a prince and more like a hero. Grendel is a monster, he is mean and selfish. They both are strong and very powerful. Also, both of them are a murder. They are different in two other ways, Beowulf is a protector and Grendel is a demon. They are alike in one other way; they both are strong.
