After reading and analyzing both Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, I received multiple perspectives of a “hero” and what that word meant during these time periods. Therefore, in both stories, it was evident that in order to be considered a hero during this time one had to be selfless and loyal to the king/crown by sacrificing oneself to maintain the tranquility within their kingdom. Nonetheless, in terms of Beowulf, I considered both the protagonist, Beowulf, and one of his warriors, Wiglaf, to be heroic individuals who portrayed all the necessary characteristics one must acquire to be considered a hero during this century. This was because Beowulf numerously sacrificed himself to protect King Hrothgar’s kingdom, when he battled
They described Beowulf in the story as a perfect hero. He was strong, and outstanding fighter and very loyal to all who came into his presence. Beowulf was a marvelous person who considered helping everyone. The story gives examples and clues of his great courage and of his great strength. Beowulf took on so many things and defeated it all.
Beowulf gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his people. The story of Beowulf isn’t just any ordinary story, but a story that has been told for centuries. A story of a hero who’s legacy has been told for so long. Beowulf’s life shows the characteristics of a true epic hero. He showed bravery, he used his strength against his enemies and in the end gave the ultimate sacrifice for his people.
A hero’s purpose is to sacrifice his life while trying to aid others. Beowulf sees this as an opportunity to make himself be known; he believes those who have fought should be remembered through time. Throughout Beowulf’s heroic journey, he fought for a loyal cause, he followed the code of honor, and showed courageous bravery. From time to time, Beowulf always showed that he cared for everyone other than himself. When Beowulf hears that the king needed aid to help defeat grendel, he never second guessed his decision.
With this characteristic he can lift a mountain for anyone or thing in need. A hero must be honorable, no lies will be told in his name. Lastly, every man needs courage to win the love of others. Courage that makes evil tremble in its skin. Wiglaf has every characteristic for becoming an amazing hero.
History has a tendency to repeat itself through actions and moments. This is evident when comparing two epic heroes: Iron Man and Beowulf. Like Beowulf, Iron Man demonstrates many of the qualities of an Anglo Saxon epic hero such as courage, strength, and arrogance. Even when read the definition of a hero: a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. The first quality they share is courage.
However, There are characteristics common to most great leaders that can be picked out. The story Beowulf contains many different rulers that people follow. Among the various characteristics these men share, a few great qualities shine through, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. The leader Beowulf portrays these qualities multiple times throughout the story, which define him as a model of leadership for all times. One of the reasons is that Beowulf always acts decisively and courageously to combat evil, and he is also noble in his actions.
The first and most important reason why Hercules is my epic hero is because he managed to do everything in a heroic manner and the difficult tasks he overcame. When he was born, and before that, he already had gained an enemy, Hera. Hera was
Those are characteristics of a real hero. Beowulf is a perfect example of what a real hero is because he does not hesitate to save a person's life even if it risk his life. He knows the reason for why they are in the situation and does not turn back from it whatsoever. An example of how Beowulf shows this is by the way he stood by Breca’s side for seven long nights at sea during the race. The reason why he did not leave his side was because Beowulf did not want Breca to be eaten by the sea monsters.
Even the smallest and seemingly weakest creatures and people can become as great as Bilbo. Bilbo perfectly fits Joseph Campbell’s definition of a hero and his adventure parallels the journey that Campbell formulated many years ago. Bilbo’s actions and journey show that he risks his life for something bigger than himself, making himself a great
Courage can be displayed in anyone but Suleiman was a man in particular wgi ysed gus courage to be known as one of the greatest rulers in history. John Crowe, a man who was on a whale capturing trip, talked in a documentary about how his crew was instructed to cut open the dead whales, fill them with rocks, and sink them to the bottom of the ocean. Even he admitted that this was horrible and something he wish would have never happened (Sorren,
