What characteristics does a person with Leadership hold? Dr. Tom Loughman, and Dr. John Finley in “Beowulf and the Teaching of Leadership” give their claims and opinions on what kind of leader is Beowulf. After reading the article I noticed Tom Loughman and John Finley used films and books to compare and relate them to heroism along with Beowulf. Each paragraph in the article gives more information on Beowulf and how he portrays as a leader. For example the authors used the conger and kanungo’s (1994) Charismatic Leader Model which fits well with Beowulf because of his fearless and confident abilities In addition of reading this article I consider that Beowulf is a true leader because of the accomplishments, also the heroic actions he made …show more content…
The authors were very prosperous in achieving their goal or message by never getting off topic and making sure they made comparison to other stories or films in order to backup there argument on how Beowulf can be a Charismatic Leader. There was no doubt that this was a topic that can be argued about from both sides because of all the evidence that could be collected. If I were to give you my honest opinion about the topic I would say it was a good form of way to tell us more about what we did not know about Beowulf. In my creative opening I agreed with Dr. Loughman and Dr. Finley on Beowulf being a charismatic leader because of the evidence they had and the reasons behind them. I gave my textual evidence in a way of support towards the authors opinions of Leadership. My major thesis was saying how Beowulf is a true leader from what he has done and the courage he has had when it came down to protect the people cares about and his kingdom. In conclusion a true Leader or hero whatever you prefer calling it is someone who has a lot of dignity and nobility to do what is right. One last thing you should be if you want to be a leader is being Self Assured at all
Leadership is a difficult quality to obtain. There are many characteristics that person needs to have in order to be considered a leader. Most important characteristics to have while in charge are intelligence, common sense, cautiousness, and bravery. Two leaders that are well-known in history are Maria Theresa of Austria and Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. This epic poem has a main focus of leadership and it is a great piece of text to get the reader to ask questions and try to find out the characteristics that make a good leader.
A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. In The Tragedy Of Macbeth Shakespeare imagines the qualities of a good leader to be honorable, trustworthy, reliable, beloved by the people, and strong-willed. Ducan and Malcolmb portray these qualities however Macbeth is lacking in the qualities to be a good leader and as a result, he is unsuccessful. Duncan and Malcolm in Macbeth by William Shakespeare show that the best leaders are selfless, honorable, trustworthy, reliable, beloved by the people, and strong-willed. Macbeth on the other hand not at all.
Beowulf, an epic recorded in the year 1060 by the Beowulf Poet, is the encapsulation of what genuine written work is, characterizing the standard of the epic itself. The more modern film of "Beowulf", delivered in 2007, is an endeavor to do equity to the Beowulf Poet's artful culmination. The poem and film have a few key similitudes and contrasts, which impact the reader/viewer. Essential likenesses between the two incorporate the courageous qualities of Beowulf and the separating of Grendel's arm; in any case, the motion picture has some exceptional contrasts from the content, for example, Beowulf's temptation by Grendel's mom, and how the result of this wrongdoing is his child the dragon, while in the content this brute is viewed as a rebel creature.
770285 The Idea of Good Leadership in Beowulf In the anonymous Anglo-Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel, heroism and leadership is one significant theme that is explored. In lines 182-211, the eponymous Beowulf is in the process of speaking to Hrothgar and his people, asking the Danish king to allow him to fight Grendel, who has been terrorizing the Danes for many years. Through his overall tone and his choice of words, Beowulf conveys the idea that a good leader is complex but well-balanced and can achieve this through several different aspects. A deeper understanding of Anglo-Saxon culture can be seen by examining this excerpt.
¨True heroism consists in being superior to the ills of life, in whatever shape they may challenge us to combat¨- Napoleon. Clearly, Napoleon is explaining that a hero will conquer any negative things in life that challenge them. For example, modern day superheroes always overcome their problems in life. Modern day superheroes such as Batman, Superman, and Spiderman fight the villains and grow superior to the negative aspects in their lives. Similarly, heroes in poems and books gain their heroic name by defeating the ills of life.
Throughout the story of Beowulf, the titular warrior develops from a nameless heir into a beloved king through his heroic feats and honorable features. His tale to and from nobility is both unique in its individual steps and normal in its incarnation of cyclical nobility. This theme of nobility is introduced in the opening passage of Beowulf through an analysis of Shield Sheafson's sources of nobility and legacy of power which are demonstrated from an account of his life and a detail of his elaborate funeral. The excerpt’s detail of Shield’s rise to power and lasting impact mirror Beowulf’s humble rise to power and many other instances of nobility including Heremod’s throughout the story, creating its common theme of nobility. Shield is
I have to admit that I first didn’t like reading Beowulf, the language and poem structure made it a little difficult for me. It wasn’t until I began working on this journal that I began to appreciate the poem, the author, and the many angles that can be discussed about this literary piece. Subjects like religion, timeline, and the author’s reason for writing Beowulf has made me become more interested about the story. How are the themes of the story observed in life and society today?
In the words of Warren Bennis, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” With this in mind, one would be deemed ignorant in stating that Beowulf does not epitomize every standard of leadership upheld by today’s society. In the epic translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf goes to considerable lengths to destroy every threat to his people no matter the expense. Therefore, Beowulf’s characteristics—selflessness and courage—make him a prominent leader in the eyes of today’s individuals.
There are many leaders in the world, stories and movies. Each have a certain meaning of why they are there, and what they are supposed to accomplish. They become role models, Gods and idols. Beowulf, Achilles, and Gilgamesh they have many similarities and many differences.
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
An admirable leader or commander is a person that people will want to look up to, someone who thinks of their people before themselves, someone who makes the tough decisions when no one else can. It is true that every leader is different in the way that they lead, there tend to many common aspects in all leaders. The story Beowulf contains many different leaders that people choose to follow. Throughout all the likable traits of a leader these men/women contain, a ton of amazing qualities that will always shine brighter than all of the other ones, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. Even the most evilest leaders are the greatest leaders in their community specifically.
Belief systems are an integral part of not only culture, but also self-image. This becomes evident in Beowulf, with both the overall story and the individual characters. Christianity and paganism vie for control of all aspects of Beowulf, just as they did with the Germanic tribes a century earlier. Although much is known about the history of the time is documented, the story is shrouded in mystery. The author and even the date it was written are educated estimates at best.
What makes a leader? I believe a leader to be intelligent ,tough, and has the determination to achieve a goal. Having certain skills will have an impact on you being a trustable leader. Being selfless and caring are also characteristics. Malcolm X his birth name Malcolm Little is a fine a example of a leader and has most of these leadership qualities.
In Anglo-Saxon literature and Greek Mythology both Beowulf and Jason show similar and unique characteristics through their pride, which reflects the values of each of their cultures. The two characters share a similar characteristic through pride such as leadership; however, Beowulf from Anglo-Saxon literature with pride tends to be very boastful and is easily triggered to compete, while Jason from Greek mythology tends to be more self-centered about the accomplishments. Based on these actions and attitudes the characters reflect the values of each of their cultures because it shows how confidence and arrogance is viewed. In the story leadership is a similar characteristic shown by both characters through their pride.
One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is that they must be actually prepared to lead under any circumstance. This sounds like something that should go without saying, but it is surprising just how many people who are in a leadership role are not prepared to take an active role in leading their team. A good leader does not sit back and observe what is going
