Beowulf vs. Achilles Beowulf is an epic poem written by an unknown author in 1000 AD but based in 500 AD. The main character, Beowulf, is an Anglo-Saxon who loves glory. The Iliad, also an epic poem, written by Homer in 1200 BC related to the events of the Trojan War. The main character, Achilles, is a greek warrior with anger issues and strong determination. While both Beowulf and Achilles have many similar characteristics as well as differences, they lived in two different time periods and still represent their respective cultures very well. A few of the characteristics Beowulf and Achilles have in common are that they’re both brave, honorable and courageous. Beowulf explains that Grendel doesn’t need weapons nor does he fear them, so he won’t use weapons either. To go into battle against Grendel, a powerful monster, with no weapons shows just how brave, courageous and honorable Beowulf is. Achilles also shows these characteristics when he says, “Likewise with me, if destiny like his/ awaits me, I shall rest when I have fallen” (62-63). Achilles is brave and courageous enough to go off and kill Hector for his best friend, whom Hector murdered. Achilles does not and will not back down until he is dead himself which is why he says, “I …show more content…
While both Beowulf and Achilles killed, they killed for opposite reasons. Beowulf killed for fame and glory. It was said in the poem, “But Beowulf/ Longed only for fame, leaped back/ Into battle” (485-487). Beowulf killed Grendel, Grendels mother, and the dragon for the glory and fame that it gave. Anglo-Saxons were loyal but were hungry for glory. By killing monsters to protect the Danes he died glorious and famous. Achilles killed to avenge his bestfriend’s death. After Achilles slit Hectors throat, Achilles asks Hector if he thought he could get away with killing Patroclus, then Hector dies. Achilles felt the need to get revenge for Patroclus. And so he
Beowulf and Achilles are both heroes with similar traits, such as both cunning in battle and they are both looking to seek revenge on a certain nemesis. Beowulf shows his dominance in battle by killing the dreadful monster, Grendel by ripping its arm off. He also then eliminates Grendel’s mother; while Achilles kills his arch nemesis, Hector, by stabbing him directly in the neck. Beowulf wants revenge on Grendel for killing the innocent Danes of his kingdom, while Achilles shows his trait for revenge by killing Hector, the man who killed Achilles’s cousin. An example of this trait is stated by Achilles “Now my soul would have he stand and fight, whether I kill you or am killed.
Beowulf, an epic poem written by two unknown authors, portrays violence and the struggles of being someone in power. Beowulf is a warrior king who was raised with the Anglo-Saxons ideals. He faces many barriers and hardships throughout his life, fighting monsters both mentally and physically. Beowulf demonstrates leadership and heroic deeds through courage, pride and greed. Heroism is portrayed in the text through courage and syntax, which affects the way the reader perceives the story.
Beowulf killed Grendel to protect others from his wrath and save future lives. Gilgamesh killed Humbaba for no other reason than showing that he could. I feel that Gilgamesh is more of a monster than Humbaba because Humbaba only killed to protect a sacred forest. Gilgamesh killed him just because he was capable. This factor makes Beowulf and Gilgamesh two very different people in my opinion.
Achilles died similarly to how Beowulf died. Their similarity’s do not detract from their differences. Regardless of their similarities they were not the same heroes, they were different from one another. Achilles was more of a person who fought for vengeance. While simultaneously Beowulf was the type of hero who would fight to keep people alive.
The Trojan Prince, Hector had gotten a very big ego from being his parents' favorite child, and the Trojans’ “hero.” So, when Achilles finally relented and joined the battle, Hector quickly retreated his men, so that he would not face defeat. A little while later, that same pride killed him. Hector, refusing to meet the shame that awaited him at Troy, and hoping to restore his heroism, stood outside Troy’s gates to fight Achilles. Achilles was the more experienced warrior of the two, and Hector was killed.
Achilles Achilles was the son of Thetis. He was the greatest warrior and champion of Greece. He also was a member of the Trojan War, he was waiting for his best friend Patrocules to come back from war, but he never returned because he died. Achilles who was full of anger killed Hector who was the greatest fighter from the Trojan side. He tied Hector’s corpse behind his chariot and pulled the body against the dirt.
Beowulf is a true hero showing no fear and selflessly volunteering himself to fight Grendel for killing men in Herot with his, “Hell-forged hands,” and accomplished victory, “A prince of the Geats, had killed Grendel. Ended the grief, the sorrow, the suffering forced on helpless people by a bloodthirsty fiend. No Dance doubted the Victory,” (404-408). Continuously, Beowulf puts himself into more danger, risking his life. Struggling he fights Grendel’s mother for killing Aeschere, “Angry; the steel-edged blade lay where he 'd dropped it.
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Beowulf is to be considered an epic poem because the hero in the story creates acts of being courageous and even superhuman in some cases, reflecting timeless values such as courage and honor, and the poem reflects unforgettable values with honor and courage. Typically in an epic poem, one will see a character or “the hero” who has outstanding courage and commit superhuman deeds and show values to other people in that era. “Then he drew himself up beside his shield./The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/trusted in his own strength entirely/
It 's easy to flee a battle, but it 's hard to stay knowing death is a definitive factor. Beowulf shows that he is willing to die for his glory and to protect the Danes in every battle he faces. Against Grendel, Grendels mother, and the dragon. During his battle with
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
Achilles anger increase with the death of patrocles by him wanting to kill all of the Trojans. Achilles started to throw their bodies in the river which displayed that he showed no remorse or compassion for them. Achilles treated Hector’s body as if he wasn’t a person. He dragged him and kept torturing him for twelve days even thought he was already dead. The burial of hector is a symbol of how Achilles anger is calming down.
Was Beowulf an honorable hero? Absolutely! He was an honorable hero. In this essay I will tell the reason for his titled name. The reasons that will be explained includes: the actions he did, the type of person he was and what he believed him, and his relentless fighting efforts towards every monster/creature around.
Is Beowulf a Hero? The poem Beowulf, tells of great the great undertakings of Beowulf, a man who has defeated many ruthless monsters and seeks fame and glory. If we take Beowulf and compare him to the Anglo-Saxon ideal hero, Beowulf fills all the necessary requirements but, when compared to modern day standards, Beowulf doesn’t quite make the cut. In the modern day, selflessness is the ideal.
Ironically in his efforts to gain fame and riches, Beowulf 's traits overlap with those of an epic hero. More important than Beowulf 's lack of morality though, is the warrior 's lack of growth throughout the story. Usually, in epic poems, the protagonists change
In grief Achilles wants to fight Hector for what he did. Hector has two choices, either to fight Achilles or hide behind the walls of Troy. Hector exclainms doubtedly “What shall I do? If I retreat behind these walls, … And now that I have ruined them all by my rashness, I am ashamed to face the men and women of Troy, or some base fellows may say-Hector thought too much of his own strength, and ruined us all!”
