Beowulf: What Makes A Good Leader

A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. Being a leader is a hard task, in the book The Odyssey and in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou, both Odysseus, and Everett have chosen to be the leader and lead their men toward the “treasure”. While both men are leaders, I think that Odysseus was the better leader compared to Everett.

Both Odysseus from The Odyssey and Dally from The Outsiders demonstrate outstanding leadership. In particular, Odysseus helped his crew escape from the Cyclops: Polyphemus by strongly convincing them to follow his lead and plan. ‘’Have courage. A solution will present itself. Haven't I gotten us out of tougher scrapes than this one?’’

There are several qualities that make a good leader, william golding wrote lord of the flies which describes a leader named ralph who lead a group of boy who were stranded on an island by a fallen. The boy selected ralph over a raise of hands, over his opponent jack. Ralph was a better leader choice over jack because, of his better thinking, ability to prioritize, and selfless personality. Thinking is a fundamental trait, thinking can make or break a leader.

A leader is a person with the power or the ability to lead others, this relates to being a hero because a hero cannot do all work on their own. A hero must have help from others who are willing to follow them and help them with their final goal. This is shown is John C. Maxwell’s quote “A leader is someone who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”. What he means is that someone who is considered a leader can know the right path, and be able to help someone else on that same path, and continue on that path with that person.

Winston Churchill. George Washington. Nelson Mandela. There is a common factor between these people, and that factor is leadership. These are people that were some of the most exemplary leaders in history.

To describe a good leader takes more than a few words. To truly describe what a good leader is, it takes understanding and empathy, and the ability to imagine becoming dependent on someone else’s orders to stay alive. It takes a lot to be a good leader, and thought the term is seemingly vague, much is implied in those two simple words. The person must be strong and smart, but also humble and good at listening. They should be brave, but not so brave as to be blinded by their pride and make foolish decisions based on curiosity.

My major thesis was saying how Beowulf is a true leader from what he has done and the courage he has had when it came down to protect the people cares about and his kingdom. In conclusion a true Leader or hero whatever you prefer calling it is someone who has a lot of dignity and nobility to do what is right. One last thing you should be if you want to be a leader is being Self Assured at all

The story is about a man named Marcus, he lives in a type of futuristic society. The story opens with Marcus waking up to a normal day, his sister burst into his room telling him breakfast is about to start. Marcus proceeds downstairs and enjoys breakfast with his family. Once they are finished Marcus and his sister go outside to play. As, they are walking his sister falls into a hole, Marcus goes down to save her upon finding his sister he also finds a robot.

A leader is someone you can look up to with admiration. A proper leader does not mislead the people that stand with them. They are open, honest, and responsible. They don’t hide their failures. They own up to their mistakes because that’s what leaders do.

As a leader you have to be humble and giving for people to like and follow you. In “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” before the green knight came he was sharing a meal with all of his army. King Arthur was not up in his castle he was down on the ground with the fellow people. He treats them equal and that is how to be a good leader. In the Story Beowulf Hrothgar shared his money and riches and did not keep them to himself.

What makes a leader? I believe a leader to be intelligent ,tough, and has the determination to achieve a goal. Having certain skills will have an impact on you being a trustable leader. Being selfless and caring are also characteristics. Malcolm X his birth name Malcolm Little is a fine a example of a leader and has most of these leadership qualities.

"Hear me! We've heard of Danish heroes, ancient kings and the glory they cut for themselves, swinging mighty swords." These verses were words sung over and over, by singing poets all over ancient Europe. They were sung in the presence of kings and warriors. They are the beginning lines of the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, an ancient tale of monsters, dragons, kings, warriors, battles, life, death, and the virtues of a hero.

What exactly is a good leader and how should they be? In the readings, by Christine de Pizan The Treasure of the City of Ladies and another by Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince. They both talk about how a prince and a princess should act upon their people. For Pizan she talks about how a princess should be kind hearted and accepting towards her people. She should act like this sho that they will help her whenever she is need.

He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015).  A leader should lead from the front and also have the ability to think quickly on their feet and take care of their Soldiers.  Have faith and trust that the leadership is doing their best to keep everything in

One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is that they must be actually prepared to lead under any circumstance. This sounds like something that should go without saying, but it is surprising just how many people who are in a leadership role are not prepared to take an active role in leading their team.
