How Berlin’s Futuristic Airport became a $6 Billion Embarrassment
The airport billed $6 billion, Europe’s ‘most modern’ airport was supposed to be built to handle 27 million passengers a year. But in the inspection of the airport before issuing the operating certificate, the officers could not believe the ignorance of the airport makers. The confusion and the improper management of the things became a $6 billion embarrassment for Berlin.
The $6 billion airport was being checked by the officers from safety and aviation department. The team of ORAT (Operations Readiness and Airport Transfer) was checking the Berlin Brandenburg International Willy Brandt Airport with the help of a dummy airplane and few dummy passengers who were the volunteers.

According to their plan, they would hire 800 low-paid workers. All the workers with their cell phone will stand all over the airport and with a single smell of smoke or fire the forces would direct the passengers towards the exit and would inform others also. Since he network was not reliable and the workers could see smoke only 6 feet above the ground, Martin Delius, called this plan the most idiotic one.
Rainer Schwarz continued the preparations for the inauguration of the airport. Schwarz was confident about opening an airport with human fired detectors. But Loge, found this idea very bad and impractical and hence refused to issue the operating license to the airport. Schwarz was upset with this decision. And he had to announce that the airport would not open on the scheduled date.
To redesign the airport properly, Meinhard von Gerkan was hired by FBB who was Germany’s most famous architect. Gerkan capitulated Schwarz’s demands of building the airport. Among all these problems and difficulties the area of the airport increased from 200,000 to 340,000 square feet. Several architects and engineers were constantly trying to build the airport. Lots of electronics and engineering companies were trying their best to have a control over the fire protection
Including women's rights, workers rights, workplace safety, fire codes and immigrant issues. Before the fire, there were little to no worker regulations, leading to worker injury and death. The only safety measures available to workers at the workplace were 27 buckets of water and an unreliable fire escape. Most of the doors were locked from the outside, making it almost impossible to escape in time of disaster. After the fire, it was almost impossible for the government not to institute laws to protect workers.
This new city, Germania, was intended to show the all mighty, powerful side of Germany and to implement other aspects from different cities from other countries including, Paris and London. This all mighty city was intended to be opened by 1950. It is through these plans, that Speer was able to truly prove his potential as he designed to have a five-kilometre avenue that would lead through the city toward a domed hall, while having a mass of a 6000-seat cinema. These plans were able to prove the architect’s efficiency when it came to mass projects and was hence, able to reflect the Nazi ideology of conquering, controlling and empowerment. Therefore, it is through Speers contribution of the Germania project was he able to contribute toward history as he would reflect Nazism and the power of
The investigation involved thousands of factories across New York and eventually uncovered a serious need for reform. “They dealt with specific aspects of the Triangle fire, providing more stringent requirements for fire escapes and fire drills and stronger regulations against locked doors, blocked exits and aisles and the presence of combustible material (Argersinger p32).” The reform
With security concerns paramount, each plane had to be searched and every passenger
The Triangle Waist Company Fire could’ve been prevented in many ways. But first i’m going to tell you what was wrong with the workplace. Max Blanck violated many safety precautions that would be punishable today. Some are, cloth scraps piled up under the table, thin aisles between each line of machines, tissue paper patterns hanging from the ceiling, men smoking in the workplace, and many more.
The employees stopped working and got into scuffles with the guards at the mill. The encounter was very violent and showed that Carnegie’s system needed a big change. His workers were not being treated right. Flash-forward two years and not much has changed. The workers 11 hour workday has extended to 12 hours with a very slight pay raise.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was an influential event in American history that caused workers and business owners all of the country to revisit their work-related regulations. Many dangers that occurred as a result of the factory owners’ actions caused the tragedy to be more harmful than necessary. Other preventable mistakes made by the firemen and their equipment added to the tragic nature of this event. America has learned that factories and businesses need safer rules and work environments to protect their employees. Because of this tragic event in the nation’s history, the government passed an abundance of laws to support the safety of workers and their work conditions.
His IPB process was flawed and he made mistakes. These mistakes included but are not limited to the miscalculation of the weather, which was unseasonable warm; road conditions, which were sandy; and
According to AF McEvoy, the fire was “the most dramatic example of industrial disaster in the annals of American labor history” (McEvoy, 1995). This tragedy sparked outrage among the public and drove a movement to improve workplace safety. As a result, the Factory Investigating Commission was established, which led to the passage of numerous labor laws that aimed to protect the rights of workers. These laws established standards for working hours, wages, and safety measures, and provided workers with the right to organize into unions.
Case 1: San Francisco International Airport and Quantum Secures SAFE for Aviation System San Francisco International Airport is expecting a rise of passengers due to an increase of low-cost carriers. They require a new security management system to accommodate the amount of traffic expected. Their current process is inefficient and disjointed, leading to many problems. The upgrade required needs to be justified and approved by management to be funded. 1.
However, were they just going to build the city back exactly how it was? No. They decided to make it multiple times bigger and better than the old 19 century chicago. This revolutionised the way we looked at cities, Big businesses, innovative buildings and the founding of a terrible baseball team. This was the start of a new era, Chicago was the first city to have all of their buildings made out of fireproof materials, and many cities followed shortly after them.
I. Summary In this day and age, more aircraft are flying than ever before. With more aircraft come more passengers. With more passengers there is a greater emphasis on safety. Ever since 9/11 safety has been at the top of the priority list when it comes to aviation.
New designs have been adopted since the onset of architecture, and thus, with the concentration of a history of architecture, new phenomenon and innovations are realized that would help in further explanation and address of other necessities in the same sector. A concentration in the History of architecture and landscape architecture as a course incorporates more than one element of
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is the winner of the 2017 Award for “World’s Best Airport Dining Experience” and 3rd place in “World’s Best Airport Shopping”, in the following I will discuss on the strength(s) and weakness(es) of HKIA in the area of dining and shopping when compared to the other airport listed in the question. Concerning dining, the strength of HKIA is their restaurants provide the food with comparatively low price. Some of the passengers may have an impression that it is expensive to eat inside the airport, but there are some restaurants in HKIA provide the food with the price lower HKD$50. With this price, passengers can choice either fast food or Chinese restaurants in which the size of food could let them feel full. Moreover, passengers can try for local food.
The research need, aim, question, objectives and an outline of the overall research design are summarised. The chapter concludes by outlining the overall structure of the dissertation. 1.1 The Nature of Architecture as a Profession To understand the significance of role of client and critical impact of architect- client relationship in the design process, one needs to first understand the nature of architecture as a professional activity. Architecture has been described as a combination of art as well as craftsmanship, social science as well as engineering.
