Panopticon as a social disciplinary mechanism, it regulates the social roles in modern society. According to Michel Foucault, panopticon allows an ostensible liberty of choice for individuals in modern society. By virtue of unverifiable operation of supervision, the panoptical mechanism auto-motivates our self-functioning of power because we believe that the omnipresent and omniscient existence of the mechanism is self-evident. The society reifies the panopticon to supervise your behaviour in public sphere. For instance, parents conform the juridical obligation to raise and protect their children while children are expected to subordinate the rules. Thus, parenting influences the growth of children as a functioning panopticon. Since its conception in Erikson’s ego psychoanalytic theory, a growing literature and significant advances have been made in identity development research (Schwartz, Zamboanga, Luyckx, Meca, & Ritchie, 2013). Identity speaks of who we are as individuals but it also comes from two different groups: social and cultural. These groups are connected to power, values and ideology. Social identities are related to how we interact with people and how we present ourselves. Meanwhile cultural identities relate to society in whole such as religion, values, etc. In this paper I will talk about the dominant and subordinate identities.
Some people might argue that a child’s upbringing forms the child’s foundation of life. It forms the child’s identity and its view of life. The upbringing of children is a wide concept because it is never the same. The question is if there is an edge between upbringing and torture. The intention of upbringing is indisputable – you want your children to have a great life and a great future, but perchance certain ways of educating children can cause more damage than good.
The environment in which an individual grows up in can affect life greatly. Our surroundings influence one’s personality, self-expression, and individuality, otherwise known as identity. Finding one’s true self is the most grueling stage of life and expectations of family and society make the process even harder. One’s true identity can sometimes clash with hopes of others, thus breaking tradition and/or family ties. Pressure to change will always be present, but staying true to uniqueness will prevail.
This is evidence that describes how living in a bad environment is what can make a person have a negative identity or to act a certain way. Furthermore, your personal identity is very important and at times may not be up to you to create, but your life and your success heavily relies on it. Whether or not you will have a good job and life ahead can depend on your identity because your perspective and views are what guide you to do things. An example of identity leading to success in a person’s life is Bill Gates who is the richest man in the world. Bill Gates did not grow up in a bad environment, he didn’t do drugs and illegal things and was instead very determined.
It is evident that young people’s experiences in second level education is moulded by the various capital forms. Bourdieu highlights four different types of capital- economic capital, cultural capital, social capital and symbolic capital. Cultural capital, social capital and emotional capital will be discussed in detail throughout this essay. Although Bourdieu doesn’t mention emotional capital he gives us a clear understanding of the other forms of capital and how they are interlinked. Bourdieu contemplates a process which one form of capital can be transformed into another’ (Bourdieu, 1986).
The adolescence stage of development is a critical transition period in a child’s life because this is the stage at which the child struggles to discover their identity, as they evolve into adults. Throughout this transition, the child experiences different physical, cognitive, and social changes that cause the child to feel the need to reconsider their identity. Sigmund Freud and his theories on childhood development were extremely popular and widely accepted all the way up until the 1960s (Felluga). Freud put great emphasis on the impact early childhood development had on becoming a well-adjusted adult. He claims, “The structure of the psyche receives its final form during childhood, specifically at the time of the Oedipus complex” (U. of California). This complex is essential in identifying with either the mother or father, in order to establish sexual orientation (Felluga). During this stage, from ages 4-7, the child finds ways to deal with separation anxiety, and it is also the time that the ego fully matures into the superego: “an internalization of the parental function that eventually manifested itself in your conscience” (Cherry).

As I mature, my perspective of life and what it is to be a unique individual is ever changing. I believe that an individual’s environmental and surrounding contributes to their identity greatly. The culture in which one grows up in is a element that shapes one’s beliefs. When I was younger, my friends aided to shape my identity. My peers had a great influence on how I defined myself in early childhood because I deeply valued and cared about what others thought of me.
Identity is social construct that many have mistaken for something an individual is born with. There are many aspects of identity that one can inherit like genes that can drive a certain type of character and certain aspects of identity a person can adopt and build for themselves. However the most part of one’s identity is consistent of what the person wants and adopts for themselves and what the society/the people around him/her choose to give him/her. Throughout this course of four weeks, my perspective of child development has changed drastically in this short amount of time. This was my first class that was related to child development and there was a lot of material that was important to learn and understand. I came to this class with not much knowledge, but I am definitely leaving this class with an abundance of information that I will be able to use in my career or just in general. Due to challenges as well as issues confronted by adolescents they may have identity confusion which is comprised of identity foreclosure, negative identity and diffusion. Identity foreclosure alludes to the identity crisis being resolved by making a series of premature decisions about one’s identity, based on other’s expectations of what and who one should be. Negative identity alludes to adolescents who form an identity contrary to the cultural values and expectations and diffusion refers to a kind of apathy in which the youth lacks any kind of passion or commitment (Louw&Louw, 2007). However, this challenge could be overcome by positive role identity or identity achievement which is “the sense of really knowing who one is and in general, where one is headed in life” (Fleming, 2004: 9).Erikson’s theory states that, throughout life, individuals go through various stages during which one will meet ever changing psychosocial challenges.
