Big Data is THE biggest buzzwords around at the moment and I believe big data will change the world. Some say it will be even bigger than the Internet. What's certain, big data will impact everyone's life. Having said that, I also think that the term 'big data' is not very well defined and is, in fact, not well chosen. Let me use this article to explain what's behind the massive 'big data' buzz and demystify some of the hype.
Basically, big data refers to our ability to collect and analyze the vast amounts of data we are now generating in the world. The ability to harness the ever-expanding amounts of data is completely transforming our ability to understand the world and everything within it. The advances in analyzing big data allow us to

Without going into too much detail, we now have software like Hadoop and others which enable us to analyze large, messy and fast moving volumes of structured and unstructured data. It does it by breaking the task up between many different computers (which is a bit like how Google breaks up the computation of its search function). As a consequence of this, companies can now bring together these different and previously inaccessible data sources to generate impressive results. Let's look at some real examples of how big data is used today to make a difference:
The FBI is combining data from social media, CCTV cameras, phone calls and texts to track down criminals and predict the next terrorist attack.
Facebook is using face recognition tools to compare the photos you have up-loaded with those of others to find potential friends of yours (see my post on how Facebook is exploiting your private information using big data tools).
Politicians are using social media analytics to determine where they have to campaign the hardest to win the next election.
Video analytics and sensor data of Baseball or Football games is used to improve performance of players and teams. For example, you can now buy a baseball with over 200 sensors in it that will give you detailed feedback on how to improve your
Hadoop [8] is an open source implementation of MapReduce programming model which runs in a distributed environment. Hadoop consists of two core components namely Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the MapReduce programming with the job management framework. HDFS and MapReduce both follow the master-slave architecture. A Hadoop program (client) submits a job to the MapReduce framework through the jobtracker which is running on the master node. The jobtracker assigns the tasks to the tasktrackers running on many slave nodes or on a cluster of machines.
I have learned Lynn Police Department uses Facebook and Twitter. For example, there was a recent robbery in Lynn Massachusetts. “The Santander Bank at 35 Market Square was robbed on Tuesday October 13 at 11:01 a.m. An unidentified male entered the bank and demanded cash from the bank teller” ( https://www.facebook.com/LynnPoliceDepartment?fref=ts). Lynn Police Department used Facebook in a positive way by involving the community to seek answers on the suspect.
In today’s society, another revolutionary invention that has shaped the circulation of information is the World Wide Web, also known as the Internet. The Internet’s quality of data widely varies from either outright abominable to pristine and clear data. The widespread abundance of all of this data is now known as “Big Data” Silver (2012). Silver goes on to illustrate many examples of statistics at work among many fields such as the failure of the stock ratings agencies to properly rate the actual integrity and value of the corporations due to greed. Silver also goes on to criticize television pundits and classifies so called “analysts” and experts into two groups; hedgehogs and foxes.
Another influential novel in America’s political history is Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass. This book was a part of the abolitionist movement during a time period of slavery and inequality of African Americans. This narrative was successful during this struggling time period as it urged people to accept the African American race. Not only did it encourage people to accept the race, but it also encouraged people to cease from slavery. The brutal and harmful details that are described in the novel showed to the nation of how detrimental slavery was on an individual African American.
An innumerable amount of those people become addicted to social media. Social media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Social media has certainly advanced over the years. We now have websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and many more. A majority of the people that use these sites are teens and young adults.
Facebook is also used to raise the awareness of their brand. Business to a greater extent uses Facebook's marketing tools to expand. For example, through advertisement and also via pages, businesses can efficiently obtain and retain customers and also raise their brand awareness. In contrast, people can use facebook to discover new companies and also brands or they can also connect with business that they have already know. Facebook's marketing tools are ready for use everywhere.
Amazon is purely an online sales portal. Based on premium web rating organizations Amazon has a position ranging from 4 to 10 on a global ranking of premium websites. The presence of Amazon in the virtual world of internet is unquestionable. Big Data is a technology area which is highly talked about during the last several years. During the last 18 months, companies in the retail sector, manufacturing, construction, and technology areas have realized the extreme potential of Big Data and are trying to gain maximum advantage from it.
General Purpose: To Inform Specific Purpose: My audience will learn the importance of social media in today’s world, from its history to the many uses it delivers. The firm procures raw materials and components across the world and continually examines its production requirement against its manufacturing capacities to pursue cost reduction. Capabilities Thanks to the cloud, Revlon has been able to resolve the difficulties of big-data management efficiently by classifying all the unstructured data in the company (Swan,
Big Data There are many different definitions for Big Data. SAS (n.d.) an analytical software company describes it as, “a popular term used to describe the exponential growth and availability of data, both structured and unstructured.” Many think Big Data just came into existence but it has been around for years. Banks, retail, advertisers have been using big data for marketing purposes.
Living in the modern era makes social media become part of our life. Basically, social media are used for communication and social interaction. Based on the Merriam-Webster, social media are forms of electronic communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos). There are lots of social media that people use nowadays such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Path, and others. Most of people probably have two or more social media’s accounts.
Social Media Analytics and features It is the process of applying data (both structures as well as unstructured) from social media sites such as twitter, facebook, Google+ and other such sites for better understanding of customer attitude and behavior. It also serve as an effective tool for business and market research and ultimately for business decision making. The large availability of user-generated data and the links between users leads to the dispersion of useful information, opinions and sentiment as well as emergent issues and trends (Leskovec 2011; Agrawal et al. 2011; Nagarajan et al. 2011) and is referred to as ‘Social Media Analytics’.
Children’s lives have quickly shifted onto the Internet in the twenty-first century. Even the President of the United States has nearly forty thousand Twitter and Instagram posts. Social networks are websites that allow users to interact over the Internet. There are 600 million Facebook users across the globe (Rosenwald 2). 300 million visit Twitter every month (Maney 3).
In 2012, Barack Obama and his opponent Romney had used several social media platforms, including Spotify, Pinterest and Instagram. Although many users expressed their annoyance about the campaign advertisement, the figures never lie: Barack Obama’s Facebook page had attracted over 30 million likes since his time as a presidential nominee (Lee). In 2008, President Obama’s campaign was also praised for its innovative use of social media to engage young voters. According to a survey by Pew Research, 39% of American adults have used social media to do at least one of eight political or civic activities and younger users are more likely to post their thoughts on politics than those who were 50 and older (Computer Business Review). Therefore, social media helps
Almost every candidate running for political position, would create a campaign through social media to communicate with the constituents. Whether it's about getting votes, or trying to get people's attention about an important cause, social media in all its platforms is the easiest way to advertise about it without having to pay for the advertising. Based on the research done on the U.S. Congressmen’s voting decisions, it’s proven that social media can have a huge effect on decision making. Also, social
