Bilbo's Family Literary Analysis

A main theme in the book is that all the people are very materialistic and today materialism is still a factor. Jay Gatsby would still be very popular and envied because of his wealth. There are people out there still today just like Daisy that value social status and money over morality. Just like in the book the economy is very good currently in the United States and people are spending more than ever. If one did not know Jay Gatsby they would think he was a self-centered rich man, but, he did not care about money.

Parris takes Hale’s books and makes a remark about how heavy they are, Hale then responds “They must be; they are weighted with authority.” (Miller 36) This reveals the fallacy; argument from authority. It is believed Hale has an abundance of knowledge of witchcraft because of all the books that he owns. However, there is a flaw in that thinking because Hale has not personally dealt with witchcraft.

Though there were many times when characters in The Great Gatsby are caring and sentimental, they are also very unconcerned and ignorant. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the theme of “wealth can breed carelessness” using the literary devices and techniques of point of view, imagery, and flashback, to create meaning in his classic work. Fitzgerald uses these techniques to show us deeper into the luxurious, and extravagant lifestyle of Jay Gatsby and his fellow associates. Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby, has an essential role in the story line because without his point of view this novel would not be the same. This simple fact always rings true. The rich rule. If this is so, why is Scrooge not living lavishly and happy, given his abundant wealth. This is because wealth and greed are not the same. In the beginning of this book, Scrooge would rather hassle families and bring misery to the community than to spend the money he already has on a nice Christmas.

Since these characters lived in this area, it shows their money came from somewhere different from the common person. They had “Old Money” and did not have to work for it. It was simply dropped into their arms; unlike the origin of Gatsby’s wealth. Throughout the book, Tom and Daisy are repeatedly recognized for their substantial wealth. Because of this, they were instantly viewed as classy and respected residents of Long Island.

To Rainsford he is probably thinking i am a famous person and don’t have enough money to buy any of the things that Zaroff has. rainsford is impressed by how he has the table. Having that much stuff, to be a candid person. I would say that is quite a civilized person. “The world is made up of two classes, the hunters and the huntees, you and i are hunters”(page 40).

Primarily, Victor Frankenstein’s home life had a formative influence in his early life since it molded him into who he became as an adult. Victor was born into a very wealthy and distinguished family, who did not let their social status and wealth define who they were in society. His family remained generous and noble. By being the affectionate people they were, Victor’s parents raised him as their plaything which left him with a large amount of confidence, and the belief that greatness is part of his destiny. This makes Victor unusually determined and ambitious (his ambition becomes great and he crosses the boundary of mankind and experimenting).

The plot takes place in America following World War I. In this era, American citizens were concerned and only worried about material wealth, not moral wealth. This why none of the characters in “The Great Gatsby” are very admirable. But out of all the characters Nick Carraway is the most admirable for three main reasons, one he is truthful to those he is close with, does his best to help others and stays to himself. I choose the poem "Richard Cory" because the poem really caught my attention on how the poet describes "Richard Cory", in many different ways, for example, the poet describes him as being handsome, good physique, well dressed but never gaudy, never talked above the people, impacted peoples emotions when he talked, very wealthy, and well educated. This poem relates to our world today because we've got people who are famous for being an outstanding motivator to people. The central theme of this poem is that wealth and status don't ensure happiness. Robinson uses connotation extensively to place Richard Cory high on a pedestal above the townspeople.

Jay Gatsby is a veteran who initially started off relatively poor, however, due to his strong will to attain the love of his life, he became very rich in a small amount of time to reside in the West Egg. Overall, the events that surround Jay Gatsby suggest that fluctuation amidst class status will not happen and class status is fixed. In the novel, fluctuation amidst class status cannot happen because the characters in the novel that have always remained in the extreme upper-class will express signs of arrogance and domination to those who are trying to climb up the wealth ladder in relative, competitive circumstances. Foster claims that many authors chose to include allusions of fairy tales in their works, because these authors assume that their readers will understand allusions of fairy tales more than any other allusions, and create an irony of a situation in the literature. For instance, Foster details one author using allusion of fairy tales by “upends our expectations about the story of Bluebeard, or Puss-in-boots, or Little Red Riding Hood to make us see the sexism inherent in those stories” (Foster 60). Foster implies that there is vast amount of fairy tales for authors to incorporate them into their work. Additionally, Foster states that fairy tales are timeless, despite the “age-appropriateness” of the literature.
